Max Verstappen verklaart waarom Red Bull afgelopen jaren sterk was in Mexico

De afgelopen twee seizoenen wist Max Verstappen de Grand Prix van Mexico te winnen. De coureur van Red Bull Racing weet waardoor dat mogelijk was: de combinatie van chassis en krachtbron werkte bijzonder goed op hoogte.

Mexico-Stad is de afgelopen twee jaar het domein geweest van Verstappen. Zowel in 2017 als in 2018 wist de Nederlander op overtuigende wijze de race op het Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez te winnen. Op papier lijkt dat circuit niet perfect te zijn voor Red Bull: het heeft twee zeer lange rechte stukken, waar het team fors in het nadeel was met de Renault-motor.

Het Mexicaanse circuit ligt echter op ruim 2000 meter boven zeeniveau en dat zorgt voor iets andere wetten. De auto's genereren minder neerwaartse druk, terwijl de luchtweerstand ook minder wordt. Red Bull produceerde steevast een ijzersterk chassis dat veel grip bood en daarmee legde het team volgens Verstappen de basis voor de zeges. Ook deelt hij een compliment uit aan voormalig motorleverancier Renault.

"De auto had altijd goede mechanische grip, en met een positieve noot moet ik zeggen dat de Renault-motor hier altijd heel degelijk was. Je moet ze natuurlijk wel de credits geven als het werkt. Dit jaar weten we vanaf de kant van Honda nog niet hoe competitief we gaan zijn, maar laten we de trainingen afwachten. Dit jaar zal het in ieder geval een stukje lastiger zijn, want in vergelijking met Mercedes en Ferrari liggen we dit jaar niet zo ver voor qua chassis."

Verstappen hoopt dit weekend zijn hattrick aan zeges in Mexico te voltooien, maar de Nederlander weet niet of dit ook echt tot de mogelijkheden behoort. In de kwalificatie vreest hij vooral de topsnelheid van Ferrari, dat sinds de zomerstop vijf uit vijf scoort als het gaat om pole positions.

Oei, Ric wordt heel nerveus van dit soort berichten. Ver komt dan misschien ook naar Renault in 2021 voor 600 miljoen Franse francs.

volgens vele hier is dat chassis ruk toch? ´niet zo ver voor´ klinkt toch echt als: we hebben gewoon nog steeds een goede wagen. Maar goed ik werd/wordt door veel mensen afgebrand als ik dat roep/zeg. ;)

  Chassis is ook ruk in vergelijk met voorgaande jaren..RedBull heeft de slag gemist en staat wederom als 3e team te harken naar af en toe een prijsje.

  In vergelijking met vorig jaar is het chassis - een beetje kort door de bocht misschien - wel ruk. Vorig seizoen was het zo'n goed chassis, dat het op sommige circuit de motor-achterstand volledig kon compenseren. Dit jaar is het chassis nog steeds goed, maar niet goed genoeg om de achterstand te compenseren. En als je dan op die circuits alsnog 5e staat, kun je het ruk noemen.

  Vergeet ook niet dat ze er een hele nieuwe motor in moesten plaatsen. dat is geen kinderwerk. Natuurlijk hadden ze data van TR en Honda. Maar de praktijk is meestal lastiger.

  Ik kan het mis hebben maar ik begreep dat de het verschil met de RB14 niet zo groot is dus het zal niet ineens ruk zijn.
  Wel heb ik ergens gelezen dat de Honda motor niet zo laag in het chassis ligt als de Renault dat deed omdat Honda gewoon een snelle motor mocht maken ongeacht of dat perfect paste in de RB15. Dit kost uiteraard wat wegligging.
  
  Waar ik het meest bang voor ben dit jaar is dat net als in Monza de auto op het rechte stuk in de hoogste versnelling in de rev-limiter loopt.
  Dit is omdat begin dit jaar de Honda veel minder sterk was en omdat de compenseren is er een bakverhoudig gekozen leidt tot een minder hoge topsnelheid maar waardoor je wel iets sneller kunt acceleren.

  RBR is ook veel downforce verloren door de nieuwe 2019 regels voor de fors simpelere, en bredere voorvleugel. Daar hadden ze de laatste jaren echt een voorsprong, in wat doorwerkte op het gehele aeropakket, maar ook op het chassis..

  Ze hebben de integratie met de PU nog niet geoptimaliseerd. En de voorvleugel was niet top en daarmee de totale werking van het pakket. Daarom zijn ze wat minder dit jaar. Maar dat maakt het pakket nog best aardig. Ik verwacht daarom ook een betere start in 2020.
