Verstappen en Vettel eensgezind: "Langzamere auto's nodig in 2021 voor beter racen"

Max Verstappen en Sebastian Vettel zijn van mening dat de auto's in de Formule 1 vanaf 2021 een stuk langzamer moeten worden als men de kwaliteit van het racen wil verbeteren.

Na 2020 gaan de reglementen in de Formule 1 grondig op de schop. Er worden financiële reglementen geïntroduceerd, maar er zullen ook grote veranderingen in het technische reglement zichtbaar worden. Het uiterlijk van de auto's gaat flink op de schop, met als doel om het makkelijker te maken voor coureurs om de auto voor hun te volgen en in te halen.

Momenteel verliest een coureur zo'n vijftig procent van de downforce van zijn auto als hij dicht achter een concurrent rijdt, met de nieuwe reglementen, die nog deze maand bekend moeten worden, wordt dit verminderd naar vijf tot tien procent. Vettel denkt echter ook dat het nodig is om de trend van het zoeken naar steeds meer downforce via de reglementen gestopt moet worden. Dat vertelde hij tijdens de persconferentie na de kwalificatie.

"Het is altijd spannend om snelle auto's te hebben. De mensen op de tribunes zien het als een auto langzaam is, dus daarom denk ik dat dit de reden is voor de trend richting snellere auto's met de reglementen van 2017 en daarna. Ik wet echter zeker dat we allemaal iets langzamer willen gaan zolang dat een stap vooruit betekent qua racen. Als dat niet het geval is, is dat natuurlijk niet wat we willen."

'Echt kunnen racen belangrijker dan langzamere auto's'

Verstappen lijkt het eens te zijn met de viervoudig wereldkampioen. De Red Bull-coureur is van mening dat het langzamer maken van de auto's niet hoeft te betekenen dat de prestaties minder indrukwekkend worden. "De auto's zijn op dit moment erg snel en ik denk niet dat je met dezelfde snelheden in de bochten een betere manier gaat vinden om ervoor te zorgen dat de auto's elkaar goed kunnen volgen."

"Ik denk dat we iets langzamer moeten gaan, maar niet vier of vijf seconden. Ik denk dat tweeënhalve seconde genoeg is. De auto zal in de bochten indrukwekkend blijven en het blijft hoe dan ook lastig als je op de limiet zit. Het is uiteindelijk belangrijker dat we echt kunnen racen dan dat we er maar zijn en niets kunnen doen. Dan maakt twee seconden sneller of langzamer ook niet zo veel uit."

Ik vind dat de nieuwe (concept) auto's er geweldig uitzien,. Dat ze een paar seconden per ronde langzamer zijn boeit me echt geen ene reet, want daar merk je als toeschouwer echt helemaal niks van. Het gaat om de kwaliteit van het (close) racen, en "normaal" slipstreamen en inhalen, en hopenlijk kan daardoor de kunstmatige DRS brievenbus in 2021 ook de FIA kliko in.

  Normale circuits zou ook al gigantische helpen om de beleving van de Formule-E op te waarderen.. Maar voorlopig is het sowieso nog appels en peren vergelijken..

Ik heb het idee dat de bredere banden het racen ook minder hebben gemaakt. Hoe minder grip de banden geven, hoe uitdagender het is voor de coureur en hoe meer een betere coureur het verschil kan maken. De gegroefde banden met minder grip vanaf '98 zorgden er bijvoorbeeld ook voor dat er meer ingehaald werd op de baan - weet eigenlijk niet waarom ze daar weer van afgestapt zijn?

  Zo is t. Smallere auto's, veel minder vleugel en die smallere banden zou het racen veel interessanter maken. Het lijkt mij geweldig om die jongens weer te zien glijden door de bochten en "normale" inhaal acties kunnen zien doen.

Eerst waren de auto’s te ‘langzaam’ vervolgens moesten de auto er beter en agressievers uitzien en sneller. Dan klagen coureurs weer over weinig grip en is de bandensljjtage te hoog of te laag. Dan weer vindt men de auto’s te zwaar. En daarnaast weer klagen dat inhalen moeilijk is. Dan wil men meer downforce om vervolgens te zeggen dat minder downforce beter is. Men weet zelf niet meer wat man wilt .
