Max Verstappen verwacht 'redelijk competitief' te zijn tijdens 100ste GP in Austin

Max Verstappen viert in de Verenigde Staten een jubileum: de coureur van Red Bull Racing zal op het Circuit of the Americas zijn 100ste Formule 1-race rijden en hij verwacht daar 'redelijk competitief' te zijn.

Een week na de gemiste kans in Mexico, waar Verstappen zijn pole position in moest leveren en vervolgens een ongelukkige race kende op weg naar P6, krijgt hij in de Verenigde Staten een nieuwe kans. In 2018 reed de Nederlander een prachtige inhaalrace in Austin. Hij startte vanaf P18, maar stond na afloop van de race naast winnaar Kimi Raikkonen op het podium met P2.

Ook voor 2019 ziet Verstappen wel mogelijkheden tijdens de Amerikaanse Grand Prix. "Onze auto zou daar hopelijk redelijk competitief moeten zijn. Vorig jaar hadden we daar een leuke race, waarbij ik vanuit achterin naar het podium kwam. Er is op dit circuit veel mogelijk, want er zijn zoveel goede inhaalmogelijkheden, wat het in de race interessant maakt."

Verstappen is blij dat hij zijn jubileum in de Verenigde Staten kan vieren. "Het is altijd goed om terug te zijn in Austin en het is een leuk circuit om mijn 100ste F1-race op te rijden. Ik hou van Amerika in het algemeen, maar in het bijzonder van Texas. Ik hou echt van het circuit, het is redelijk hobbelig voor een nieuw circuit en het heeft een goede combinatie van old school bochten. Dat maakt het erg leuk om te rijden."

Verstappen woensdag in Hollywood voor demo-run

Verstappen reist niet direct vanuit Mexico naar Texas. De Nederlander wordt woensdag in Hollywood verwacht voor een van de fan festivals van de F1. "Voor Austin stoppen we in Los Angeles voor het F1 Festival in Hollywood. Daar kijk ik erg naar uit en het is altijd leuk om het publiek enthousiast te krijgen met wat donuts!"

Jos heeft er aan 107 (106 starts) deelgenomen. En daar heb ik 10 jaar naar gekeken. Het gaat hard met Max.

  Zoals je wel weet reed mens destijds 16 tot 17 Grand Prix per jaar. Bovendien stond Jos Verstappen in 1995 en in 1998 een half seizoen langs de lijn, in 1999 was het Honda avontuur en helemaal geen Grand Prix deelname. Dus dan kom je al snel op 10 jaar.
  Wel mooie tijden waren dat vond ik. Inmiddels dus alweer 20 jaar terug dat Honda project, wat een geweldige verhalen zijn daarover geschreven plus mooie foto's!

  Magnussen heeft in Australië 2015 de geblesseerde Alonso vervangen,
  terwijl hij de rest van het seizoen niet gereden heeft.
  Hij is een seizoen eerder begonnen dan Max en Carlos.
  Vandaar dat hij in Mexico al een heerlijke taart heeft gekregen.
