Max Verstappen na 'redelijk positieve dag': "Sommige hobbels lijken wel schansen"

Max Verstappen kijkt met een redelijk positief gevoel terug op de eerste dag op het Circuit of the Americas. De Red Bull-coureur noteerde de derde tijd van de dag, maar zag nog wel wat verbeterpunten qua snelheid op de lange runs.

In de eerste oefensessie op vrijdag stond de naam Verstappen na afloop van de training bovenaan de uitslag. Dat kon de Nederlander in de tweede sessie niet herhalen, maar met een derde positie zat hij er wederom goed bij. De achterstand Charles Leclerc op P2 was slecht 0,014 seconden, terwijl het gat naar Lewis Hamilton op P1 drie tienden bedroeg. Dat was volgens Verstappen wat geflatteerd.

"Het was een redelijk positieve dag. De snelheid van de auto op de korte runs is niet verkeerd. Lewis had een enorme slipstream op het achterste rechte stuk, dus die rondetijd is niet heel representatief. Het gat is dus wat kleiner." Wel ziet Verstappen dat de lange runs een verbeterpuntje zijn. "In de lange runs hadden we een beetje achterstand, dus daar moeten we nog aan werken."

Verstappen 'voorzichtiger' door hobbels op COTA

Een ander belangrijk gespreksonderwerp op het Circuit of the Americas was hoe hobbelig het asfalt was. Tijdens de eerste training kwamen er een aantal klachten over de asfaltlaag en ook op camerabeelden was duidelijk te zien hoe de coureurs op sommige plekken over de baan stuiterden. Verstappen is blij dat de meeste hobbels niet in de remzone zitten, maar hij is wel wat voorzichtiger met het afwijken van zijn lijn.

"Het was erg hobbelig. Het circuit wordt ieder jaar hobbeliger en hobbeliger. Het gaat richting het punt dat je je afvraagt of het normaal is en wat we eraan kunnen doen, dus daar gaan we naar kijken. Gelukkig zitten de meeste hobbels niet in de remzone. Het zijn wat rare plaatsen waar de hobbels zitten. Dat is hetzelfde voor iedereen, dus daar moeten we gewoon mee dealen."

"Je moet voorzichtig zijn. Op sommige plaatsen ben ik wel wat bang dat ik mijn rug beschadig als ik van de lijn wil gaan en iemand wil inhalen. Het is iets waar we naar moeten kijken. Ik heb niets tegen wat hobbels, want op een stratencircuit hoort het erbij, maar deze hobbels zijn wel vrij hevig. Het lijkt wel een soort sprong of een schans. Daar komen de wielen los van de grond en dat is niet wat je wil."

Leuk. Eindelijk wat variatie met die hobbels. Laat ze maar een beetje leiden. Iedereen zegt toch dat ze het te makkelijke hebben. ;)

Het zag er op TV als hedtig uit, laat staan als je in de auto zit.
Asfalt eraf, ondergrond geheel egaliseren en weer asfalteren. Dure grap, maar dat is nodig om het weer F1 waardig te maken. Nu is het een beetje veel te hobbelig.

  Ik kan me herinneren dat ze in Singapore hetzelfde hadden, terwijl Ferrari heel gladjes over de hobbels gingen.

  @SCHANTZ34, Ik las ergens dat het circuit op sommige plaatsen ANDERHALVE meter gezakt is sinds de aanleg, ik ben ook geen ingenieur maar dat lijkt me ook niet de bedoeling nee

Die toren staat dus ook scheef, echt bijzonder dat daar niet naar gekeken is. De lift werkt al niet meer. Nu lopen ze in Texas wel een beetje achter maar zo veel dat ze niets geleerd heb van de toren van Pisa is wel vreemd.
