Max Verstappen: "Behouden Albon voor 2020 verstandige keuze van Red Bull"

Max Verstappen vindt dat Red Bull Racing een verstandige keuze gemaakt heeft om Alexander Albon ook in 2020 voor het Oostenrijkse team te laten rijden.

Bij de Grand Prix van België verwelkomde Verstappen de Britse Thai voor het eerst als teamgenoot. Albon mocht op Spa Pierre Gasly vervangen, die vanwege tegenvallende resultaten teruggezet werd naar Toro Rosso. Albon maakt sindsdien een prima indruk: hij eindigde zeven keer op rij in de top 6 en scoorde bovendien meer punten dan zijn teamgenoot, die weliswaar meer pech kende.

Verstappen kan goed met Albon opschieten en vindt de keuze van Red Bull een verstandige. "Het is een aardige jongen en ik denk dat de afgelopen twaalf maanden een achtbaan voor hem zijn geweest. Hij is rustig en relaxed en de mensen binnen het team mogen hem. Hij is gemakkelijk in de omgang en dat helpt. Hij is snel, doet zijn werk en scoort de punten, dus dit is volgens mij de beste manier om door te gaan."

Eerder dit jaar vertelde Verstappen al dat hij er geen behoefte aan heeft om een rol te spelen in wie zijn teamgenoot moet worden. Tegenover onder andere GPToday.net verklaarde de Nederlander dan ook dat hij in dit geval geen input gehad heeft in het keuzeproces. "Uiteindelijk is het niet aan mij om zijn prestaties te beoordelen. Christian [Horner] en Helmut [Marko] nemen uiteindelijk de beslissing."

'Na overstap is de snelheid er meteen'

Net als dit jaar het geval was bij Albon, kreeg Verstappen in 2016 de kans om gedurende het seizoen bij Red Bull Racing in te stappen. Tijdens de Grand Prix van Spanje won hij meteen bij zijn eerste optreden voor zijn nieuwe team. Toch stelt de Nederlander dat hij ook een aanpassingsperiode had bij het team: niet zozeer qua snelheid, maar wel qua auto en het inpassen in de rest van het team.

"De rondetijd is er meteen en gedurende het weekend kom je er wel. In de kwalificatie zit je altijd op de limiet. Tussen mijn eerste race en nu kom je in een situatie waarin je je veel meer op je gemak voelt – je kent de auto, je werkt met min of meer dezelfde mensen. Je weet daardoor makkelijker welke kant je op kan gaan met de setup. Toen ik bij Red Bull kwam, luisterde ik en volgde ik de richting van Daniel iets meer."

"Wel heb je je eigen rijstijl, dus het is altijd iets anders. Ik wist niet welk effect bepaalde dingen hadden op de auto, want het was anders dan bij de Toro Rosso. Door de jaren weet je beter wat je wil van de auto en wat er veranderd moet worden. Hoe meer ervaring je krijgt, hoe makkelijker je werkt tijdens een weekend. Dat is het voornaamste. Qua snelheid was het er wel zo’n beetje vanaf het eerste weekend."

´Qua snelheid was het er wel zo’n beetje vanaf het eerste weekend."

dit maakt hem juist zo speciaal, hij hoeft niet echt te wennen aan wagens. De setup heeft even tijd nodig maar hij is in staat om een wagen gelijk op de limit te rijden. Schumacher/Senna/Vettel/Oke we geven ´charlie´ ook maar even het voordeel boven de twijfel/Alonso hadden dit ook.

  Niet eens met Vettel, in 2014 maar oom dit jaar is gebleken dat Vettel wel gevoelig is zodra een auto niet helemaal reageert zoals hij dat wil. Dat is dan vervolgens terug te zien in zijn snelheid en kleine foutjes.
