Mattia Binotto over snelheid Ferrari: "Lopen nog steeds achter op concurrenten"

Ferrari-teambaas Mattia Binotto geeft toe dat het Italiaanse team nog steeds achterloopt op zijn rivalen op het gebied van racetempo, en beweert dat ze zich meer op de snelheid in bochten concentreerden dan op de rechte stukken tijdens het weekend van de Braziliaanse Grand Prix.

Ferrari zat er in vergelijking met de Verenigde Staten goed bij in Brazilië, voordat het contact tussen coureurs Sebastian Vettel en Charles Leclerc hun race beëindigde. In de slotfase van de race viel Bottas uit wegens een motorprobleem, daarna kwamen de twee Scuderia-coureurs met elkaar in aanraking. Het ging mis en Leclerc moest meteen stoppen, terwijl Vettel nog wat meters doorreed met een lekke band.

Ferrari’s kracht tijdens seizoen was snelheid op de rechte stukken, met Leclerc’s overwinningen in België en Italië vanwege zijn ongelooflijke tempo op de rechte stukken. Voor de zomerstop liep het echter nog niet zo soepel voor de Scuderia, als na de zomerstop.

Het tempo van de Italiaanse renstal was echter niet zo duidelijk te zien in Sao Paulo en Binotto zegt dat dit een bewuste keuze voor Ferrari was. "We zijn nog steeds langzamer qua race pace, niet veel, maar zeker wat er nodig is om ervoor te zorgen dat we een race kunnen leiden”, zo vertelt hij tegenover Autosport.

"Sebastian stond op een comfortabele derde plaats, hij was sneller dan minstens één Mercedes en één Red Bull. Charles startte vanaf de 14e plaats en zou uiteindelijk -zonder de crash- op het podium staan, dus ik denk dat zijn race zeker een goede was", voegde hij eraan toe.
