Robert Kubica verwacht in 2020 in DTM te racen: "Zou daar blij mee zijn"

Robert Kubica rijdt komend weekend zijn (voorlopig) laatste race in de Formule 1. De Pool heeft naar eigen zeggen zijn keuze gemaakt voor 2020, waarbij de DTM hem zeer aanspreekt.

Na ruim acht jaar afwezigheid keerde Kubica begin dit jaar terug in de Formule 1 bij Williams. Het seizoen liep echter uit op een deceptie: de Williams FW42 is simpelweg geen goede auto gebleken en Kubica had zelf grote moeite om teamgenoot George Russell bij te houden. Aan het eind van het seizoen vertrekt hij en tegenover GPToday.net verklapte hij dat hij weet wat hij in 2020 wil doen.

"Van mijn kant is het besluit genomen", vertelde Kubica, die wel toegeeft dat de zaken 'gecompliceerd' zijn. "Ik wil er niet te diep op ingaan, want het is redelijk gecompliceerd en we moeten ervoor zorgen dat het vanuit verschillende punten en perspectieven werkt. Hopelijk wordt het een wat normalere procedure zodra dit opgelost is, en het zou binnenkort opgelost moeten zijn."

Kubica ambieert stap naar DTM

In een eerder stadium maakte Kubica er al geen geheim van dat hij een rol als test- en reservecoureur bij een van de Formule 1-teams wel ziet zitten, zolang hij ook in een andere klasse kan racen. Dat is nog steeds het doel: de enkelvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar hoopt op een kans in de DTM, terwijl sponsor Orlen graag wil dat hij ook in de Formule 1 betrokken blijft.

"Over mijn raceprogramma besluit ik 100 procent zelf. Bij mijn rol in de Formule 1 is er natuurlijk een tweede deel, en dat is Orlen. Zij willen graag in de Formule 1 blijven en we willen kijken of we alles samen kunnen laten vallen. Dat is volgens mij in het belang van iedereen. Soms is er dus meer voor nodig dan alleen mijn besluit."

"Ik zoek naar een grote uitdaging en de DTM, waarvan de kans het grootste is dat ik er zal racen, is waarschijnlijk binnen Europa het zwaarste kampioenschap buiten de Formule 1. We komen in een zeer specifiek kampioenschap met coureurs van hoog niveau. Het is daar als rookie niet makkelijk. Als ik daar zou kunnen racen, dan ben ik daar blij mee. Zoals ik al zei, sta ik er ook voor open om meerdere dingen te combineren en iedereen tevreden te houden."
