Medisch probleem George Russell, Sergey Sirotkin op standby voor Williams

De deelname van George Russell aan de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi is nog onzeker. Motorsport.com meldt dat de Brit kampt met een medisch probleem en Sergey Sirotkin zou klaar staan om in te vallen als dat nodig blijkt.

Wat het probleem van Russell precies is, is nog onduidelijk. De Williams-coureur heeft vanochtend nog een controle ondergaan en kreeg daarbij toestemming om tijdens de eerste vrije training in actie te komen. Daarna zal er beoordeeld worden of de Britse rookie fit genoeg is om ook in de rest van het weekend in actie te komen.

Mocht blijken dat Russell niet fit genoeg is om de rest van het weekend in actie te komen, dan zal Sergey Sirotkin naar verluid de vervanger van Russell worden. De Rus reed vorig jaar een heel seizoen voor Williams en is momenteel in Abu Dhabi aanwezig als reservecoureur van zowel Renault als McLaren. Sirotkin zou donderdagavond met succes een stoeltje gepast hebben bij het team.

Ocon en Latifi geen opties als invaller

Ook Esteban Ocon was volgens Motorsport.com in beeld om Russell te vervangen als dat nodig is, maar tot een invalbeurt zal het niet komen voor de Fransman. Ook hij paste op donderdagavond een stoeltje, maar de reservecoureur van Mercedes bleek te lang te zijn om comfortabel in de FW42 plaats te kunnen nemen.

Met Nicholas Latifi heeft Williams zelf ook een reservecoureur in dienst, maar het team zou de Canadees niet te veel hooi op zijn vork willen laten nemen. Dit weekend komt Latifi zelf nog in actie in de Formule 2, waar hij de tweede positie in het kampioenschap verdedigt. Bovendien heeft de 24-jarige, die volgend jaar het hele seizoen voor Williams zal racen, nog niet genoeg punten om zijn superlicentie aan te kunnen vragen.

Latifi nu nog niet genoeg punten? Krijg je die dan pas aan het einde van een seizoen?

Ik denk trouwens dat Russel net zoveel gehakt van Latifi maakt als dat hij met Kubica gedaan heeft dit jaar
