Valtteri Bottas acht podium haalbaar ondanks start vanaf P20

Valtteri Bottas noteerde tijdens de kwalificatie de tweede tijd, maar hij zal in Abu Dhabi vanaf de laatste positie moeten starten. Desondanks denkt de Mercedes-coureur dat het podium nog altijd haalbaar is.

Op de vrijdag was Bottas nog de snelste man van alle coureurs geweest, maar dat succes kon hij niet herhalen op zaterdag. In de derde en laatste vrije training moest hij Max Verstappen en teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton al voor zich dulden en in de kwalificatie lukte het de Fin niet om de pole position te bemachtigen. Bottas moest uiteindelijk genoegen nemen met de tweede tijd, weer achter teamgenoot Hamilton.

Een dubbele motorwissel zorgt er echter voor dat Bottas de race in Abu Dhabi vanaf de laatste positie moet starten, maar desondanks gelooft hij er nog steeds in dat een podiumplaats tot de mogelijkheden behoort. "Ik geloof daarin. Alles is mogelijk en we hebben een goede auto, die normaal gesproken voor ons op zondag beter is dan op zaterdag. Ik zal er dus alles aan doen."

Mercedes Bottas voelde niet zo goed als op vrijdag

Bottas moest in Q3 dus zijn meerdere erkennen in teamgenoot Hamilton, die de 88ste pole position in zijn carrière pakte. De nummer 2 van het wereldkampioenschap stelde na afloop van de kwalificatie dat het bij hem op zaterdag niet zo lekker liep als op de vrijdag, maar dat het desondanks een goede dag is voor Mercedes. "Voor het team is het een enorm sterke dag en we zagen vandaag dat we redelijk goede snelheid hadden."

"Het voelde vandaag niet zo goed als gisteren - ik gleed iets meer - maar Lewis heeft sinds gisteren verbeteringen gevonden en een aantal goede ronden gereden. Hij was gewoon sneller. Ik zal in ieder geval als laatste starten met mijn gridstraf van 40 plaatsen of zoiets, maar we zullen de vechtlust vinden voor morgen."

Zonder gekkigheden (SC), verwacht ik niet dat Bottas op eigen kracht naar het podium gaat rijden, daar is hij imo gewoon niet goed genoeg voor.

  Alonso dacht ook dat het podium haalbaar was in 2010 na het blind volgen van Mark Webber zijn pitstrategie... (had beschadigde velg) Petrov dacht hier anders over.

Vanaf p20 naar het podium kan alleen met gewaagde acties en schijt aan alles hebben , laat Bottas dat nu allemaal niet hebben

Ik denk wel dat het mogelijk is. LeClerc is toch al van plan om Max eraf te rammen, Vettel zet 'm zoals gewoonlijk een paar keer in de rondte, Hamilton heeft een off-day en de rest wil zo snel mogelijk op vakantie.
Ik denk eerder een overwinning voor Bottas!
