Max Verstappen over afstand naar Mercedes: "Moeten nog wel wat inhalen"

Max Verstappen kende in 2019 zijn beste seizoen tot nu toe. Met de derde positie in het kampioenschap, drie zeges en twee pole positions heeft de Nederlander naar eigen zeggen het ‘maximale’ uit de auto gehaald.

De verhoudingen in de Formule 1 verschoven regelmatig in het seizoen 2019. Mercedes domineerde de eerste seizoenshelft, terwijl Ferrari erg sterk begon na de zomerstop. Er ontstonden echter geruchten over de legaliteit van de Ferrari-motor, waarna de Formule 1 ingreep en kwam met technical directives. Ferrari was vervolgens niet meer dominant, terwijl Red Bull Racing zich weer nadrukkelijker aan het front meldde.

Verstappen blikt terug op een goed seizoen, waarin hij wel zag dat het type circuit soms de doorslag gaf. Hij ziet een positieve trend bij Red Bull Racing en verwacht dat het team langzaam in de buurt van het meestrijden om titels kruipt. "Ik denk dat we dichterbij komen."

“Het hangt een beetje af van de lay-out van het circuit, maar van onze kant denk ik dat we ons het hele seizoen lang goed verbeterd hebben. We zijn eigenlijk wat eerder dan verwacht gaan vechten met de Zilverpijlen en begonnen verschillende races te winnen.”

Voorbereiding 2020 in volle gang

Het seizoen is pas net voorbij, maar het werk voor het volgende seizoen is al in volle gang. “Er is nog werk aan de winkel om Mercedes in te halen, uiteindelijk zijn ze dominant geweest door de jaren heen. Je probeert natuurlijk alles om het gat te dichten, maar het is simpelweg niet eenvoudig.''

De line-up bij de drie topteams blijft volgend jaar hetzelfde. Max Verstappen en Alexander Albon blijven bij Red Bull Racing, Charles Leclerc en Sebastian Vettel bij Ferrari en Valtteri Bottas en regerend wereldkampioen Lewis Hamilton bij Mercedes.

De hoop bij RB zal vast zijn dat Newey met zijn team de motor van HOnda efficiënter in het chassis kan passen en dat HONDA daarbij ook op dat vlak meer kan betekenen dan dat RB/HONDA voor 2019 voornamelijk zijn gegaan om de Honda motor alle ruimte te geven om zich te ontwikkelen.

Persoonlijk denk ik dat RB heel hard geraakt is door de nieuwe regels voor de voorvleugels van 2019, wat dat betreft wederom een staaltje van heel handige politiek die Mercedes in 2018 heeft gespeeld en daarmee de angel uit Newey zijn ontwerp te halen.

Maar wie weet heeft Newey door hoe de voorvleugel werkt en kan hij wederom een sterk chassis bouwen als die van 2018.
