Valtteri Bottas pakt eerste rallyzege bij wedstrijd in Franse Côte d'Azur

Valtteri Bottas heeft in het eerste weekend na het Formule 1-seizoen niet stilgezeten. De coureur van Mercedes kwam in actie tijdens een rally aan de Franse Côte d'Azur en wist deze wedstrijd zelfs te winnen.

Het was voor Bottas zijn eerste zege in een competitieve rallywedstrijd. Samen met navigator Marko Salminen zat de Fin in een Citroën DS3 WRC, waarmee hij in alle klassementsproeven in de top 3 wist te eindigen. Bottas moest de leiding na de eerste etappe nog laten aan Robert Consani, maar na de tweede proef nam hij de leiding over om die vervolgens niet meer af te staan.

Aan het eind van de wedstrijd, die negen proeven telde, had Bottas een voorsprong van precies 50 seconden op Consani, die de wedstrijd afwerkte in een Skoda Fabia R5. De laatste podiumplaats was voor Fransman Simon Gachet, die samen met bijrijder Pascal Duffour in een Citroën C3 R5 reed. Zijn achterstand op Bottas bedroeg ruim 1 minuut en 45 seconden.

Eigenlijk had de laatste podiumplaats voor Formule 2-coureur Dorian Boccolacci en navigator Florian Barral moeten zijn. Qua eindtijd had de voormalig Lotus F1-junior al beslag gelegd op die klassering, maar een tijdstraf van 20 seconden wierp hum uiteindelijk terug naar de vijfde positie in het klassement, nog achter voormalig WRC-coureur Stéphane Lefebvre.
