Max Verstappen voelt geen druk: "Komt vanzelf als je gaat strijden om overwinningen"

Max Verstappen en Red Bull Racing voelen kort na afloop van het Formule 1-seizoen 2019 geen druk als er vooruit wordt gekeken naar 2020. Mocht die druk wel komen, dan vertrouwt de Nederlander erop dat de ervaring van het team voldoende is om daarmee om te gaan.

Het eerste jaar van de samenwerking tussen Red Bull Racing en Honda zit erop na de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi en dat viel niet tegen. Verstappen stond twee keer op pole position, pakte drie overwinningen en stond daarnaast nog eens zes keer op het podium. Dat was voldoende voor Verstappen om derde te worden in het kampioenschap, terwijl Red Bull Racing comfortabel derde werd bij de constructeurs.

Volgend seizoen wil het Oostenrijkse team gaan oogsten en er wordt geen geheim gemaakt van de ambitie om voor de wereldtitel te gaan. Het belang van een goede start van het seizoen werd al benadrukt, maar een dergelijke sterke start zou ook voor druk kunnen zorgen. Verstappen verwacht echter niet dat hij en Red Bull onder druk zullen bezwijken, zo vertelde hij tijdens Peptalk.

"Ik voel op dit moment helemaal geen druk. Die zal er natuurlijk wel zijn als we het jaar met een goede auto beginnen. Als team weten we ook dat we willen winnen en we zijn nu heel gefocust bezig om in die positie te komen. Als je tijdens het seizoen voor de overwinningen gaat strijden, dan komt de druk vanzelf, maar uiteindelijk heeft iedereen bij Red Bull volgens mij voldoende ervaring om daarmee om te gaan."

'Moeten als team ook aan auto zelf werken'

Verstappen ziet dat Honda het niveau van Mercedes inmiddels weet te benaderen met de motor, maar voor titels moet niet alleen de motor beter. "Ten opzichte van Mercedes was de motor tegen het einde van het seizoen gewoon goed. Ferrari springt er op dat vlak nog steeds wat bovenuit, maar we moeten als team ook aan de auto zelf werken. Op dat vlak is Mercedes nog steeds erg sterk."

De Mercedes en Honda motor zijn gelijkwaardig. Volgens Binotto is de Ferrari motor
"slechts" 20pk sterker (AMuS). Denk zelf wel iets meer.
RBR moet meteen met een heel goed chassis komen, want dat van Mercedes is superieur
op de meeste circuits en als Ferrari nu wél met een goed chassis komt, zijn ze het sterkst.

Gala's, sportman van het jaar, of z'n vader wel of niet de GP van Zandvoort af moet vlaggen. Bij het laconieke om af.
Maar ik denk dat dit hem helpt om de titel ooit te pakken, hij voelt geen druk. Andere coureurs zijn daar in het verleden juist door geknakt.

  Ben benieuwd hoe hij ermee om zal gaan als ie na 5-6 wedstrijden aan de leiding gaat in het kampioenschap en het er echt om gaat spannen.

  Eerlijk gezegd heb ik het niet gezien, maar zoals je Max beschrijft herken ik wel. Ik vind dat dat nonchalante hem niet siert en het komt soms wat gemaakt over. Alsof niets hem nog wat kan schelen - behalve de wereldtitel.

Als zijn auto de beste is van het veld dan gaat Max de overwinningen fluitend aaneenreigen en komt er juist minder druk denk ik. Enige waar je dan op moet letten is tot de laatste ronde geconcentreerd blijven.
