Pietro Fittipaldi ziet Formule 2 niet als een optie voor 2020

Pietro Fittipaldi hoopt nog altijd de Formule 1 te bereiken. Wat hij in 2020 gaat doen, is nog onduidelijk. Hij heeft meerdere opties, maar de Formule 2 is naar eigen zeggen geen van die opties.

Afgelopen seizoen combineerde Fittipaldi, die in 2017 de laatste kampioen was in de Formule V8 3.5, zijn werkzaamheden als ontwikkelings- en simulatorcoureur bij Haas F1 met vaste optredens bij Team WRT in de DTM. Het Belgische team, dat in de Duitse klasse uitkomt met bolides van Audi, maakte echter bekend dat Ed Jones en Fabio Scherer in 2020 de coureurs van het team zijn.

Fittipaldi zal waarschijnlijk ook in 2020 actief zijn in de simulator van Haas F1, zeker als Robert Kubica het team niet komt versterken. Daarnaast wil de Braziliaanse kleinzoon van Emerson Fittipaldi graag blijven racen, vooral om voldoende punten voor zijn superlicentie te scoren. Fittipaldi heeft naar eigen zeggen voldoende opties voor 2020, maar hij sluit een verblijf in de Formule 2 voorlopig wel uit.

"Kijkend naar kansen om te racen is de DTM een mogelijkheid, maar we kijken ook naar andere opties. De Super Formula is een optie. Ik wil graag terugkeren in de single seaters, want mijn doel en droom is om de Formule 1 te halen. Ik wil er alles aan doen om te proberen dat te bereiken. De Formule 2 is op dit moment geen optie, dat past niet bij het schema en het werk dat ik moet doen. Maar we kijken naar andere dingen."
