Ricciardo: "Marko zag het al aankomen, maar Horner dacht dat ik een grap maakte"

Het viel Daniel Ricciardo halverwege 2018 zwaar toen hij Helmut Marko en Christian Horner moest vertellen over zijn vertrek bij Red Bull Racing. De reactie van de teambaas van het Oostenrijkse team maakte dat niet makkelijker voor hem.

Ricciardo kondigde in augustus van 2018 aan dat hij Red Bull Racing met ingang van 2019 zou gaan verlaten voor een avontuur bij Renault. Die overstap kwam als onverwacht, omdat de Australiër bij Red Bull mee kon strijden om overwinningen, terwijl Renault meestrijdt in de middenmoot. Ricciardo moest het nieuws natuurlijk ook melden bij talentscout Marko en teambaas Horner en dat viel hem zwaar.

"Het was klote. Misschien komt het omdat ik een positief persoon ben, maar ik hou er niet van om mensen teleur te stellen", vertelde Ricciardo in de podcast Beyond the Grid. "Ik voel me al slecht als ik een diner met vrienden moet afzeggen, dus ik hou daar niet van. Natuurlijk moest het op een gegeven moment wel gebeuren."

Gesprek met Horner 'ongemakkelijker' dan met Marko

Omdat Ricciardo niet in Europa was op het moment van zijn beslissing, belde hij met Marko en Horner. "Helmut was niet heel erg verrast. We hadden over en weer al wat onderhandeld en dat duurde behoorlijk lang, dus hij wist of verwachtte misschien dat ik zocht naar iets anders. Hij was dus wel een beetje verrast, maar ik zag het ergens al aankomen", herinnert de Australiër zich.

"Het gesprek met Christian was eigenlijk een stuk ongemakkelijker. Hij dacht dat ik een grap uithaalde, dus ik zei dat het niet zo was. Christian zei dat hij wist dat ik een grap maakte, dus ik vroeg me af of ik moest zeggen ‘ik zou willen dat ik een grap maakte, maar het is niet zo’. Dat was dus ietwat ongemakkelijk, maar we hadden nog wel een goed gesprek toen hij het zich realiseerde.”

  1,5 jaar oud idd en nog altijd liegt Daniel over de werkelijke reden van zijn vertrek: Max was bijna altijd sneller dan hij en trok daarmee het team naar zich toe, Daniel zag dit ook en had er geen zin meer in continu achter Max aan te rijden, Daniel wilde zijn status als 'top' coureur behouden en ging daarom weg naar een team waar hij minder onder druk wordt gezet door zijn teamgenoot.

"In gesprek met het Oostenrijkse Servus TV vertelde Marko: “Ik begrijp het niet, het is een hele vreemde situatie. De onderhandelingen verliepen stroef, maar woensdag voor de Oostenrijkse Grand Prix hebben we twee uur gesproken en zijn we tot een akkoord gekomen. Tijdens het weekend hebben we gesproken en hebben we weer onderhandeld.
In Hongarije vertelde hij aan [Dietrich] Mateschitz en mij dat hij akkoord was en dat hij tijdens de test [na de Hongaarse GP] ging tekenen. Maar dat gebeurde niet. Donderdag belde hij en vertelde hij me dat hij naar Renault ging."

  dit obderbouwt wel dat Marko er een onderbuikgevoel bij had dat Ricciardi toch weg zou gaan. Duidelijker voorbeeld van aan het lijntje houden kan je niet geven.
  
  Als waar is wat in die quote van 2018 staat dan is het ook absoluut slecht van Ricciardo om een monelinge afspraak niet na te komen. Maar dat is niet onbekend in de F1. Was nog de conclusie trouwens in dat Gasly "Marko hield zich niet aan de afspraak"verhaal.
