Daniel Ricciardo: "2018 was voor mij frustrerender dan 2019"

De prestaties van Renault in 2019 vielen tegen, maar Daniel Ricciardo vond het niet zijn meest frustrerende seizoen in de Formule 1. De Australiër vond 2018 een vervelender jaar om te doorstaan.

Tussen 2016 en 2018 liet Renault een stijgende lijn zien in het kampioenschap. Vanaf de negende positie in 2016 klom het team via P6 op naar de vierde positie in het kampioenschap van 2018. Ricciardo zag wel wat in het project en maakte vanaf topteam Red Bull Racing de overstap naar het Franse fabrieksteam, maar het seizoen 2019 verliep voor de combinatie niet zoals gehoopt.

Daar waar werd gerekend op verdere progressie en een nieuwe stap richting de top 3, moest Renault in werkelijkheid genoegen nemen met de vijfde positie in het kampioenschap. Zelfs klantenteam McLaren moest het voor zich dulden. Desalniettemin blijft Ricciardo erbij dat het jaar 2018 voor hem frustrerender was dan dit jaar. "Het was nu absoluut niet frustrerender dan vorig jaar", vertelde hij in de podcast Beyond the Grid.

"2018 was frustrerend. Dat was het meest frustrerende jaar, omdat het zo veelbelovend begon en het daarna grotendeels niet meer op gang kwam. Meestal had ik het gevoel dat het buiten mijn macht lag en dat was het meest frustrerend. Als ik zelf 90 procent van de fouten zou maken, dan had ik daar iets aan kunnen doen. Ik zeg niet dat ik perfect ben, maar vorig seizoen lag het meestal buiten mijn macht."

"Dat zorgde voor frustratie. Dit jaar hebben we niet consistent goede resultaten behaald en ging het op en neer, maar ik denk ook dat mijn verwachtingen voor dit jaar niet zo hoog waren als die vorig jaar bij Red Bull Racing waren. Ik wist dat er veel werk te doen zou zijn, dus ik zorgde ervoor dat er geen irritatie ontstond over de resultaten."

Natuurlijk Daniel. Veel leuker dan om plek 8 te strijden i.p.v voor het podium. Gelooft hij zichzelf nog wel? "Ik wist dat er veel werk te doen zou zijn". Denkt hij dat dat komend seizoen anders zal zijn? Of het seizoen daarna.

  Beter vechten om plek 8, dan je auto in podiumkansrijke positie steeds kapot te zien gaan, terwijl je teamgenoot de ene na de andere podiumplaats haalt.

  Dat... hoevaak moest Ricciardo vanuit het achterveld starten omdat er dingen mis ging.. om er alleen maar renault te van beschuldigen kan niet.. team maakte ook fouten.. en kijkt af en toe meer te concentreren op 1 rijder... dat is bij red Bull altijd geweest, vraag maar aan Webber , Vettel (2014) en Gasly, (die wilde iets op de auto hebben zodat hij zich beter voelde in de auto ..

  En zet dat eens af tegen hoe ontzettend veel geluk Ricciardo in 2017 had waar hij 9 keer het podium haalde waarvan 7 keer met geluk, inclusief een van de meest lucky overwinningen ooit in de F1.
  
  Nee hetgeen wat denk ik voornamelijk frustrerend was voor Ricciardo was dat hij zijn teamgenoot niet bij kon houden.
  
  Dit jaar viel Ricciardo ook 5 keer uit en werd 1 keer gediskwalificeerd. Dus zoveel beter was dat ook niet dan 8 uitvalbeurten in 2018. En daarnaast ook maar 8 keer dit jaar in de punten voor Ricciardo en ik weer niet eens hoe vaak Ricciardo op een ronde is gereden door Verstappen.
  
  Maar natuurlijk kan Ricciardo niet zeggen dat 2019 frustrerender is geweest want hij heeft zelf de keuze gemaakt. Net zoals dat Alonso zogenaamd ook nooit spijt had van zijn keuze om Ferrari te verlaten om vervolgens 4 jaar lang bij McLaren in de achterhoede rond te rijden.
