Verstappen: "Timer op stuur hielp tegen te laat beginnen aan tweede kwalificatierun"

Red Bull Racing heeft na het kwalificatie-fiasco in China een goede oplossing gevonden om herhaling te voorkomen. Volgens Max Verstappen werd hij vervolgens uitgerust met een timer op het stuur.

In het afgelopen seizoen weren er tijdens de kwalificaties regelmatig problemen met coureurs die te laat over de finish kwamen om hun laatste snelle ronde aan te vangen. Dat probleem was het grootste in Italië, toen bijna alle coureurs te laat over de finish kwamen omdat niemand als eerste over de lijn wilde komen voor die snelle ronde. Het ging in 2019 echter vaker fout.

Zo was Charles Leclerc in Abu Dhabi net te laat om nog een tweede snelle ronde te starten, terwijl Verstappen in China het slachtoffer was van gepriegel in de laatste fase van Q3. Daar heeft Red Bull een oplossing voor gevonden, zo vertelde Verstappen aan Ziggo Sport. "Wij hebben dat opgelost met een timer op het stuur. Dan zie ik of ik met de snelheid die ik op dat moment rijd of ik het haal of niet."

Verstappen geniet van enorme steun door fans

In het interview met Rob Kamphues vertelde de 22-jarige coureur ook dat hij enorm genoten heeft van de massa's in het oranje uitgedoste fans die hem gedurende 2019 aan kwamen moedigen. "Dat is super mooi om te zien. Ik kan me daar echter niet te intensief mee bezig houden, want ik moet natuurlijk wel presteren. Anders komt er niemand op de tribune zitten, zo moet je het ook zien. Maar natuurlijk zwaai ik naar mijn fans op de tribunes."

Die drukte qua fans op de Red Bull Ring zorgde er ook voor dat Verstappen die zege van 2019 het mooiste vond. "Ik leef voor podiumplaatsen en dan natuurlijk het liefste de eerste plek. Maar alles er omheen kan ook heel mooi zijn en mij kippenvel geven. Als ik de Grand Prix van Oostenrijk terugkijk, krijg ik absoluut kippenvel."

Rocket science. En wat betreft al dat oranje, dat snap ik dat ie dat mooi vind. Een hoop komen via zijn eigen reisbureau daar heen. Dus hoe meer oranje des te harder groeit zijn bankrekening
