Max Verstappen uitgeroepen tot Limburgse sportman van het jaar

Max Verstappen is voor het eerst in zijn sportieve carrière uitgeroepen tot Limburgse sportman van het jaar. De coureur van Red Bull Racing is de opvolger van wielrenner Tom Dumoulin.

In het verleden heeft Verstappen meermaals aangegeven dat hij weinig ziet in verkiezingen tot sporter van het jaar. Desondanks was hij in 2019 op twee fronten genomineerd: enerzijds was hij een van de genomineerden voor de verkiezing van de Limburgse sportman van het jaar, terwijl hij ook kanshebber is op de titel Nederlandse sportman van het jaar.

Die titel pakte hij in 2016 al eens, toen Verstappen de overstap maakte van Scuderia Toro Rosso naar Red Bull Racing en voor zijn nieuwe team meteen won in Spanje. De titel Limburgse sportman van het jaar had Verstappen echter nog niet eerder gepakt, tot maandagavond. De Formule 1-coureur kreeg bij de stemming de voorkeur boven wielrenner Mike Teunissen en boogschutter Mike Schloesser. De afgelopen zes jaar ging de prijs naar Dumoulin.

Verstappen kende in 2019 zijn beste seizoen in de Formule 1 tot nu toe. Namens Red Bull Racing wist hij twee pole positions te pakken, stond hij drie keer op het hoogste treetje van het podium en was hij in totaal negen keer onderdeel van de podiumceremonie. Deze resultaten waren voldoende voor Verstappen om zich te verzekeren van de derde positie in het kampioenschap, achter Mercedes-coureurs Lewis Hamilton en Valtteri Bottas.

Even een serieuze vraag. Wat maakt Max Verstappen een Limburger? Voor zover ik weet is hij geboren in België, woonde daar, ging daar naar school en hij woont tegenwoordig in Monaco. Ik zie de connectie met Limburg niet helemaal.

Verstappen heeft meermaals aangegeven niets met dit soort uitverkiezingen te hebben. Zouden ze dit bij de organisatie ook weten? Of willen ze hem gewoon claimen en hebben ze daar verder lak aan? Maar wellicht dat ze het echt niet weten.
