Toto Wolff: "Het is minder leuk zonder Niki Lauda, maar werk blijft me motiveren"

Toto Wolff lijkt in principe niet van plan om Mercedes na 2020 te verlaten. Wel heeft de teambaas van de Duitse fabrikant minder plezier in het werk dan in de tijd toen Niki Lauda hem nog assisteerde.

Wolff is sinds 2013 betrokken bij het Formule 1-team van Mercedes. Sinds dat moment werkt hij samen met Lewis Hamilton. De coureur is in het bezit van een contract dat eind 2020 afloopt en hij wordt in verband gebracht met een overstap naar Ferrari. Ook voor Wolff geldt dat hij gelinkt wordt aan nieuwe werkgevers: hij zou mee kunnen gaan met Hamilton naar Ferrari, of een functie als CEO van de Formule 1 kunnen bekleden.

Wolff, die in Brazilië voor het eerst sinds de laatste races van 2012 absent was bij een Grand Prix, lijkt echter niet echt bezig te zijn met een overstap. Tegenover de Oostenrijkse zender ORF verklaarde hij het volgende. "Je moet beseffen dat Niki Lauda en ik dit avontuur in 2013 niet alleen als medewerkers, maar ook als aandeelhouders in het team aangingen."

"De vraag draait dus niet alleen om of ik ergens anders aan de slag ga, maar of ik in algemene zin doorga in de Formule 1. Op dit moment geniet ik ervan en dat vind ik het belangrijkste. Het is absoluut minder leuk dan toen Niki er nog was, maar het werk blijft me motiveren. Zolang ik geloof dat ik iets bij kan dragen, zal ik doorgaan."

Wolff verwacht dat Mercedes in F1 blijft

Mercedes heeft een aantal zeer succesvolle jaren achter de rug sinds de introductie van de hybride V6-turbomotoren. Zes keer achter elkaar werden beide titels gepakt, maar mogelijk komt er een abrupt einde aan die reeks. De Duitse autofabrikant wordt in verband gebracht met een vertrek uit de Formule 1 na 2020. Volgens Wolff valt die dreiging echter wel mee.

"Als ondernemer denk je aan de lange termijn. Je kijkt dus goed naar of de Formule 1 zich op een positieve manier blijft ontwikkelen. Dat zou ik met 'ja' beantwoorden. Hebben we een gedeeld doel met Daimler? Ook dat is het geval. Daimler en Mercedes bouwen straatauto's en raceauto's. Dat is de kern van ons bedrijf en daarom willen we samen verdergaan."

Ik kan het maar moeilijk voorstellen dat iemand als Toto, met deze uitspraak, ondertussen een overstap naar Ferrari zou overwegen. Iets waarover Eddy Jordan tamelijk zeker is, maar ik dus niet.

  Ach Eddie Jordan, als je maar vaak genoeg iets roept heb je het vanzelf wel een keer goed. Hij zei in 2017 ook dat McLaren in 2018 met Mercedes-motoren zou rijden. Bovendien is het ook zijn verwachting en volgens mij is dit voor de rest nergens op gebaseerd. Ik geloof er ook niet in en heb ook nog wel vertrouwen in Binotto. Je moet mensen ook de kans geven om te leren van hun fouten. Zie Zak Brown, de man werd hier volledig afgemaakt voor de fouten die zijn voorgangers hebben gemaakt. Inmiddels is hij volgens iedereen de man die McLaren weer naar de top zal leiden.

  Het kan wel zijn dat ze het hebben geprobeerd bij ferrari natuurlijk maar ik heb er een hard hoofd in dat t gaat plaatsvinden
  
  En wat zack brown aangaat , die heeft gewoon zijn zwakke punten gezien en daar de goede mensen neergezet .
  Commercieel had ik m altijd wel hoog zitten , maar tactisch en technisch zal t n stuk minder zijn
