Bottas: "Ik ben in 2019 weer verliefd geworden op de Formule 1"

Het lastige jaar 2018 heeft zijn sporen achtergelaten bij Valtteri Bottas. De Fin vertelde aan Autosport dat hij het plezier in het racen verloor en dat hij zijn stoeltje bij Mercedes kwijt zou zijn als hij nog zo'n seizoen had gekend in 2019.

Na een behoorlijk eerste seizoen bij Mercedes in 2017 was de vorm in 2018 ver te zoeken bij Bottas. Daar waar teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton zijn vijfde wereldtitel in de wacht sleepte, wist Bottas geen enkele race te winnen op weg naar de vierde positie in de titelstrijd. Het herstel volgde in 2019: vier overwinningen zorgden ervoor dat Bottas de tweede positie in het kampioenschap bemachtigde, wederom achter Hamilton.

Die betere prestaties waren volgens de coureur zelf van doorslaggevend belang voor behoud van zijn stoeltje. "Als ik een vergelijkbaar seizoen met 2018 had gehad, denk ik niet dat het team met mij door was gegaan. Zo werkt de Formule 1. Het is zo belangrijk voor mij, maar ook voor mijn algemene toestand." Want mentaal had Bottas het niet eenvoudig in 2018.

"Ik heb nu tussen de race veel meer plezier gehad en ik ben weer een soort van verliefd geworden op de sport, iets wat ik misschien een beetje verloor richting het einde van vorig jaar. Ik geniet nu echt van het rijden en het is zo'n belangrijk seizoen voor me. Nu kan ik gelukkig stellen dat ik nog vele jaren voor me heb, hopelijk met dezelfde ontwikkeling."

Bottas telde in 2018 dagen tot einde seizoen af

Bottas kende een prima start van het seizoen met twee zeges in de eerste vier races. Na een periode zonder zeges keerde de sterke vorm terug richting het einde van het jaar. Bottas won de races in Japan en de Verenigde Staten en wist vanaf de laatste startpositie bijna het podium te bereiken in Abu Dhabi. Het betere seizoen zorgt voor meer vertrouwen bij Bottas.

"Mijn mindset is absoluut heel anders dan vorig jaar. Ik telde toen de dagen af tot het seizoen voorbij zou zijn en dat ik een manier kon vinden waarop ik mezelf kon herpakken en vanaf nul kon beginnen. De laatste maand van vorig seizoen voelde als een heel, heel lange periode."

  @DOP Snap helemaal niet waar die opmerking vandaan komt. Ze komt gewoon heel normaal over op TV, ze wilde alleen de stress van de F1 niet meer... dus tenzij jij iets over haar weet wat niemand anders weet, lijkt je opmerking meer iets te zeggen over je eigen leven dan over dat van haar.

  dat zou trouwens een mindgame van jewelste zijn als Lewis Hamilton in Melbourne met Vallteri's ex aan de hand de Mercedes garage komt binnenlopen..

Meer dan 2e rijder is hij niet waard.
Maar zonder een vrouw die zit te zeiken,
Kan hij in 2020 meer hoogtepunten bereiken.

Vul het soort hoogtepunten zelf maar in.

  Nou, eigenlijk zakt m'n broek er vanaf. Wat een zak hooi zeg. De beste auto van het veld, er zelf een potje van maken en dan zielig doen dat je de 'motivatie verliest'...? Man, man, ga asjeblieft wat anders doen en zet een coureur uit welk willekeurig team in die super Benz. 100% dat er niemand op de grid staat die het slechter doet als Bottas.

  Als je niet lekker in je vel zit en uit vorm ben raak je zelfvertrouwen kwijt. Dat is het belangrijkste wat er is. Dit jaar heeft hij dat teruggewonnen en er zijn er zeker 10 op de grid die het dit jaar slechter hadden gedaan dan Bottas. Die 10 waren namelijk helemaal opgekouwd en uitgespuugd door Hamilton. Los van dat is het nog de perfecte teamplayer en 2e coureur.

  Met een 'collega' die alleen maar met mindgames bezig is moet je wel heel sterk in je schoenen staan. Niet voor niets dat Rosberg na een seizoen zijn rug rechthouden niet meer de energie voor nog zo'n eentje kon opbrengen.
