Robert Kubica op weg naar test- en reserverol bij Alfa Romeo

Robert Kubica lijkt op weg naar Alfa Romeo. GPToday.net heeft vernomen dat de gesprekken tussen coureur en team over een rol als test- en reservecoureur in een vergevorderd stadium zijn.

Kubica keerde begin 2019 terug in de Formule 1 als fulltime coureur bij Williams, maar zijn rentree liep uit op een lastige periode. Teamgenoot George Russell bleek in het algemeen een stuk sneller te zijn, terwijl de bolide van Williams op zijn zachtst gezegd geen hoogvlieger was. Wel scoorde Kubica in Duitsland het enige punt van het Britse team, maar hij kondigde zelf aan dat hij aan het eind van 2019 zou vertrekken.

Kubica kan terugkeren op oude nest

Wel wilde Kubica graag blijven racen, waarvoor hij in verband wordt gebracht met een avontuur in het DTM bij BMW. Tevens was hij bij meerdere teams in beeld om de test-, reserve- en simulatorcoureur te worden vanaf 2020. Eerst leken Haas F1 en Racing Point de belangrijkste kandidaten, maar uiteindelijk lijkt toch Alfa Romeo met de diensten van de Pool weg te lopen.

Naar verluidt zijn de gesprekken tussen Kubica en Alfa Romeo in een vergevorderd stadium en er wordt verwacht dat er relatief kort na de jaarwisseling meer duidelijkheid komt. Voor Kubica zou het betekenen dat hij terugkeert op het oude nest: tussen 2006 en 2009 kwam hij al voor het team uit, dat destijds nog onder de naam BMW-Sauber racete.

Geheel verrassend zou een nieuwe samenwerking tussen Alfa Romeo/Sauber en Kubica niet zijn. De manager van Kubica, Alessandro Alunni Bravi, is tevens directeur bij Islero Investments. Dat bedrijf is op zijn beurt weer de eigenaar van Sauber/Alfa Romeo, wat het lijntje tussen Kubica en het team erg kort maakt. Bovendien is het team druk bezig met het ontwikkelen van een nieuwe simulator en de Poolse coureur zou daarbij, gezien zijn goede reputatie op dit vlak, een waardevolle toevoeging kunnen zijn.

Bovendien loopt naar verluidt het sponsorcontract van Shell met Alfa Romeo aan het eind van 2019 af. Dat zou de weg voor Kubica vrijmaken om PKN Orlen als sponsor mee te nemen naar het Zwitserse team. Orlen zou dan met haar naam en logo’s op de bolides komen te staan, maar het leveren van olie en brandstof zullen ze niet doen. Door de samenwerking met Ferrari blijft Shell deze producten leveren aan Alfa Romeo.

Ik dacht dat al rond was? Eerst ging het om Haas, daarna heb ik gelezen dat hij rond was met Alfa Romeo. Misschien was dat bericht voorbarig.

Eerst zou die test- en reserverol bij Haas krijgen. Daarna kwam Racing Point en nu dus Alfa Romeo? Hoe geloofwaardig zijn deze berichten? Kan ook zijn dat die de partijen tegen elkaar uitspeelt.
