Hamilton: "Zonder Lauda had ik nu niet meer bij Mercedes gereden"

Mercedes en de Formule 1 werden in 2019 opgeschrikt door het overlijden van drievoudig wereldkampioen Niki Lauda. Het was een klap die ook hard aankwam bij Lewis Hamilton.

Lauda overleed afgelopen mei, nadat zijn gezondheid in het voorgaande jaar een aantal fikse tikken had opgelopen. De Oostenrijker onderging onder andere een longtransplantatie, waarvan hij nooit echt goed wist te herstellen. Tot zijn overlijden was Lauda non-executive voorzitter van Mercedes en zeer betrokken bij de gang van zaken bij het team. Hamilton geeft toe dat hij Lauda mist.

"Ik mis het ontvangen van de berichten. Ik mis het delen van deze video's. Ik heb nog steeds veel van onze gesprekken en af en toe lees ik ze terug. Nogmaals: zonder zijn steun had ik mogelijk niet de overstap naar dit team gemaakt. Zonder zijn steun zou ik niet nog steeds bij dit team zitten. Ik denk niet dat dit team dezelfde successen had behaald zonder zijn steun."

"Hij ging naar het bestuurd, pushte en zette ze met de rug tegen de muur. Daar was hij de beste in. Hij draaide er bij mij ook niet omheen. Hij was de brug tussen... Toto was coureur en het bestuur, die dat niet waren, hadden een echte kampioen die begrijpt en snapt hoe lastig het is om weekend na weekend te leveren, ook als je een fout maakt. Dat is waar hij zo'n belangrijke pilaar voor mij is geweest. Ik mis hem dus enorm."

Hamilton reed tijdens de Grand Prix van Monaco met een speciaal helmontwerp ter ere van Lauda, die dus een zeer belangrijke rol speelde in Hamilton's overstap van McLaren naar Mercedes in 2013. Voor laatstgenoemde team komt de zesvoudig wereldkampioen nog steeds uit en dat zal ook in 2020 het geval zijn. Daarna is Hamilton's toekomst nog onduidelijk, omdat zijn contract dan afloopt.

  Toffe film ja, gaaf hoe Lauda zelf een auto sneller kon maken. Tegenwoordig is dat niet te doen.
