Terugkeer in de Formule 1 'onwaarschijnlijk' voor Sergey Sirotkin

Sergey Sirotkin zou graag nog terug willen keren in de Formule 1, nadat hij eind 2018 moest vertrekken bij Williams. De Rus beseft echter dat het een lastige opgave wordt om terug te keren.

Na meerdere jaren doorgebracht te hebben in de GP2 en Formule 2 maakte Sirotkin in 2018 de stap naar de Formule 1. Een jaar later kwam er echter alweer een einde aan dat avontuur, nadat hij bij Williams moest vertrekken. De wens om als vaste coureur terug te keren in de Formule 1 is absoluut nog aanwezig bij Sirotkin, maar hij lijkt maar al te goed te weten dat het een lastig verhaal wordt.

"Ik zou heel graag terug willen komen, maar ik heb het niet over de Formule 1. We weten dat dit erg lastig is. Ik droom ervan en ik geloof nog steeds dat ik iets kan laten zien, maar objectief gesproken is dat erg onwaarschijnlijk. Ik wil absoluut terugkeren in de racerij, maar ik wil graag dat het een nieuwe start is. Daarna is het mogelijk om een verdere carrière op te bouwen."

Sirotkin leert dat hij van zijn werk moet houden

Sirotkin bleef in 2019 betrokken bij de Formule 1 door een rol op zich te nemen als reservecoureur van Renault. Later in het jaar ging hij dezelfde rol daarnaast ook vervullen namens McLaren. Tot het rijden van races kwam hij echter niet, met uitzondering van een aantal WEC-wedstrijden. De daardoor ontstane situatie zorgde ervoor dat Sirotkin zich iets belangrijks ging realiseren.

"Dit jaar heeft me geleerd dat je van je werk moet houden. Pas in de jaren dat je niet de kans hebt om te racen, ga je begrijpen dat dit echt je roeping is. Gezien de omstandigheden begon ik vorig jaar dat gevoel af en toe te verliezen. Ik moest dus een stap terug zetten en terugkeren met nieuwe gedachten."

Sirotkin heeft de F1 gehaald dankzij het feit dat hij een Rus is en (dubieuze) sponsoren heeft die flinke bedragen beloven. Feit is en blijft dat hij als coureur simpelweg niet goed genoeg is. Jammer maar helaas. Uithuilen en lekker WEC, DTM, Lemans of formule E gaan racen.

  Nee, zo slecht vond ik hem ook niet; eens met @VH.
  "Feit is en blijft..." suggereert een beetje dat de huidige coureurs wel allemaal goed genoeg zouden zijn. Nou is het niveau afgelopen jaren misschien wel omhoog gegaan, maar er rijden er nog steeds ook die echt niet beter zijn dan Sirotkin.
  Z'n beste kans is Putin lief aankijken (of meer dan alleen dat). Dus het sponsoren verhaal klopt wel, maar dat geldt voor zoveel coureurs.

  Verder is het hebben van geld altijd een behulpzaam gegeven. Dit is zelden anders geweest in de F1.
