Calderon switcht naar Super Formula en wordt eerste vrouw in serie

Tatiana Calderon zegt de Formule 2 na slechts één seizoen vaarwel. De Colombiaanse gaat in 2020 in de Super Formula racen en wordt de eerste vrouw die een zitje bemachtigt in die klasse.

Honda kondigde vrijdag op de autosalon in Tokio aan welke coureurs er in 2020 voor de fabrikant gaan uitkomen in de Super Formula. Een van de namen op die lijst is Juri Vips, die afgelopen seizoen in de FIA Formule 3 vierde werd in het kampioenschap. Ook staat er met DragoCORSE een team op de grid dat na enkele jaren afwezigheid weer terugkeert en Calderon is door het team binnengehaald als coureur voor die inschrijving.

"Omdat ThreeBond DragoCORSE vanaf dit jaar meedoet in de Super Formula, hebben we een uitgebreide zoektocht gehad naar een coureur. Daarbij zijn we uitgekomen bij Calderon", vertelde teameigenaar Ryo Michigami. "Hiermee hebben we nog een wens van het team in vervulling laten gaan: het streven naar nieuwe dingen en het schrijven van historie."

"Ik wil mijn diepe en oprechte waardering voor ThreeBond uitspreken, dat ons deze kans heeft gegeven, en datzelfde geldt voor iedereen die hun energie in dit team heeft gestoken. Calderon wordt dus de eerste vrouwelijke deelnemer in de Super Formula. Afgelopen seizoen was ze ook al de eerste vrouw die racete in de Formule 2, hoewel ze in die klasse afgelopen seizoen weinig indruk wist te maken. Ze was de enige coureur die in alle races in actie kwam, maar geen enkel punt wist te scoren. Daarvoor bracht Calderon drie jaar door in de GP3 Series.

3 jaar relatief onzichtbaar on GP3, geen enkel punt behaald in F2.
De kansen op een F1 zitje voor Calderon zijn minimaal tot nul (tenzij ze een hele rijke sponsor aan de haak weet te slaan), dus is het voor haar slim dat ze naar een andere klasse toe gaat.
Of ze in de Super Formula wel indruk kan maken is vraag 2, maar ze heft in ieder geval geschiedenis geschreven door de eerste vrouw te zijn.

Ik wens haar veel successen toe in de Super Formula, maar ben bang dat het net zo;n success zal worden als de haar GP3 en F2 carriere.

  Leuk allemaal, maar had liever gehad dat er voor snelheid was gekozen ipv positieve gender discriminatie te gebruiken om jezelf in de kijker te zetten.
