Leclerc: "Zege op Monza deed mij beseffen wat Ferrari-coureur zijn betekent"

Charles Leclerc heeft zijn zege tijdens de Grand Prix van Italië aangewezen als het belangrijkste moment van zijn tweede jaar in de Formule 1.

Na zijn debuutseizoen bij Sauber mocht Leclerc in 2019 instappen bij Ferrari. Hoewel hij af en toe nog wat foutjes maakte, wist de Monegask de nodige indruk te maken. In het kampioenschap eindigde hij voor teamgenoot en viervoudig wereldkampioen Sebastian Vettel en ook wist hij twee races te winnen: direct na de zomerstop was Leclerc de sterkste tijdens de Grands Prix van België en Italië.

De zege in België was een emotionele, nadat goede vriend Anthoine Hubert de dag voor de race overleed door een zware crash in de Formule 2. Toch wijst Leclerc zijn andere zege aan als het belangrijkste moment van zijn seizoen. "Het is lastig om woorden te vinden die omschrijven wat ik tijdens de race op Monza voelde", vertelde Leclerc op de Autosport International Show.

De 22-jarige coureur omschrijft hoe de druk zich opbouwde: "Er was veel druk, want we waren natuurlijk in Italië en Ferrari is daar enorm groot. Iedereen wilde dat we wonnen, dus rond het hele team was er veel druk." Die druk bouwde verder op, doordat Leclerc en Ferrari al op de maandag in Milaan werden verwacht voor evenementen. Bijkomen na de zege in België zat er dus niet in.

"De druk bouwde zich op", vervolgt Leclerc. "Het was daarna al bijzonder om de pole te pakken, maar ik moest me richten op de race. Daarin had ik geen moment om op adem te komen. Lewis [Hamilton] zat de hele race minder dan twee seconden achter mij, dus er was veel druk. Het was extreem bijzonder om daarna op het podium te staan na het winnen van de race, waarna je het rode leger onder het podium ziet staan."

"Het gaf mij kippenvel en het zorgde voor het besef hoe het is om coureur bij Ferrari te zijn. Dat realiseerde ik me daarvoor ook al, maar het echte besef komt pas als je op Monza wint en de echt de passie in de ogen van de mensen kan zien - de passie die ze hebben voor het merk. Het is echt ongelooflijk om te zien.

Heeft dat gevoel ook plaats gemaakt hoe het is om een een vals spelende wagen te rijden? Wat in Monza zeker het geval was.

  Hou daar nou eens over op. Er waren alleen maar vermoedens, er is nooit enig bewijs geleverd. Niet door Mercedes, niet door Red Bull en niet door de FIA.

  Gevoelig onderwerp @Cherokee? Oh, wacht, het is naderhand onderzocht, toen alles verwijderd was, en die 5 kilo extra brandstof was een ongelukje. En dat Ferrari spontaan geen snelheid meer had was ook geen verdenking? Nee het chassis was ineens anders?

Dat kan ik me goed voorstellen. Als kind van het team winnen op Monza bij de eerste de beste poging. En dan vervolgens op het podium voor die tientallen duizenden Ferrari-fans te staan. Dat lijkt me prachtig. Alle controverse ter zijde, Ferrari komt het dichtst bij wat op een voetbalclub lijkt.

  Ik neem aan dat je het qua fans en beleving bedoelt. Want als Ferrari of F1 op voetbal zou lijken keek ik al jaren niet meer.

  Ja, qua beleving en fans bedoel ik. Ferrari is echt een instituut dat qua historie en dergelijke het meest op een voetbalclub lijkt. Dat is bij Mercedes, Red Bull Racing etc nog minder.

  Bij Ferrari zijn ze al vele jaren expert in het hebben van een wrange bijsmaak, daarom aten ze (volgens de traditionele FIA directives) met de kerstbrunch voor straf alleen maar sweet honey spare ribs.

  Niet minder dan slechts 6? Heb je daar enig bewijs voor? Volgens mij niet, aangezien dat niet waar is. Daarnaast ben ik zeker niet anti-Max, sterker nog ik support hem. Alleen niet op de manier zoals sommigen hier.... maargoed, dan word je al gauw gezien als anti.
