Max Verstappen wint Esports-race met kleinst mogelijke verschil

Max Verstappen komt pas volgende maand weer in actie in een Formule 1-auto, maar afgelopen weekend bereidde hij zich door het rijden van twee Esports-wedstrijden wel alvast een beetje voor op het nieuwe seizoen.

Het hoofdprogramma van Verstappen bestond afgelopen weekend uit de virtuele 24 uur van Daytona. Samen met Dominik Färber, Atze Kerkhof en Patrick Schneider deed hij in een Daytona DPi van Team Redline mee aan de 24 uursrace, maar veel succes had het team niet. 's Nachts ontstonden er problemen met de internetverbinding, waarna het team noodgedwongen de strijd moest staken.

Eerder op zaterdag was Verstappen echter ook al aan het simracen geslagen. Hij nam deel aan de zesde kwalificatiewedstrijd van de Porsche Esports Supercup, die ook verreden wordt in de game iRacing. De race op de road course van Daytona wist de coureur van Red Bull Racing uiteindelijk met minimaal verschil te winnen: de achterstand van Thibault Cazaubon bedroeg aan het einde van de race slechts 0,001 seconde.

Cazaubon kon in de allerlaatste ronde langszij komen bij Verstappen, wat hij zelf toeschreef aan de slipstream die de Fransman had. "Hij had ook nog een beetje 'side draft' toen hij naast mij kwam rijden, waardoor hij nog wat sneller ging", vertelde Verstappen aan Esports Club. Het is nog onduidelijk of Verstappen aan verdere races van de Porsche Esports Supercup gaat deelnemen: na afloop van het reguliere seizoen wordt er in ieder geval een prijzenpot van 100.000 dollar verdeeld.
