Montoya hoopt over enkele jaren op nieuwe F1-strijd tussen Montoya en Schumacher

De Formule 1 krijgt op termijn mogelijk niet alleen een nieuwe editie van Verstappen tegen Schumacher, want mogelijk voegt de naam Montoya zich ook bij dat rijtje. Dat is in ieder geval waar Juan Pablo Montoya op hoopt voor zoonlief Sebastian.

Sebastian Montoya is momenteel hard aan de weg aan het timmeren om zijn eigen racecarrière op poten te zetten. Komend jaar debuteert de 14-jarige Colombiaan in het Italiaans Formule 4 en dat doet hij met de begeleiding van vader Juan Pablo, de C ART-kampioen van 1999 en tweevoudig winnaar van de Indianapolis 500. Tegenover Auto Bild sprak hij over de eerste stappen van Sebastian in de autosport.

"Hij wordt bijna vijftien en dit seizoen begint hij in de Formule 4 in Italië", vertelt Montoya senior over Sebastian, die tot en met 2019 actief was in de karts. "We hebben samen veel plezier op de circuits, maar het is aan hem om te bepalen wat hij echt wil bereiken in de sport. Hij heeft enorm veel potentie en hij is echt ongelooflijk goed."

Montoya hoopt op strijd tussen 'zonen van'

Montoya probeert zijn zoon zo goed mogelijk voor te bereiden op een toekomst in de autosport en staat hem dan ook bij als een soort mentor. Het doel is vooralsnog de Formule 1 en de zevenvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar verwacht dan een strijd tussen Sebastian Montoya en Mick Schumacher. "Waarschijnlijk wel. Sebastian is nog wat jonger dan Mick, maar die jongens gaan elkaar over een jaar of vier tegenkomen. Daar kijk ik naar uit."

Zelf reed Montoya tussen 2001 en 2006 in de Formule 1 voor BMW Williams en McLaren. Als rookie kende hij geen ontzag voor grote namen en al tijdens zijn derde race in Brazilië ging hij met het nodige ellebogenwerk voorbij aan Michael Schumacher. Montoya leek op weg naar de zege, totdat een achterblijver met een crash een einde maakte aan zijn race: dat was Jos Verstappen, vader van Red Bull-coureur Max...

  1 Massa was meer dan genoeg... voor een race-liefhebbende kartende zoon zijn die eerste 3 namen als vader de meest gewenste achternamen naar mijn mening. Montoya zelf barst van het talent en racecraft.

Hij zou geen goede vader zijn als hij het tegenovergestelde zou beweren in een interview.... ?

Verder zou ik het wel gaaf vinden, zeker als hij ook het temperament van z'n pa heeft.... ?

  Als iemand er echt geen pepernoot van kan, dan kun je ook als vader zijnde hem juist in bescherming nemen.

  Montoya was lang een van mijn favorieten, jammer dat hij de overstap naar McLaren maakte waar hij niet uit de verf kwam en z'n motivatie verloor.
  Het was altijd mooi om hem te zien strijden aan het front tegen Schumacher

Tot dusver heeft Mick Schumacher nog onvoldoende laten zien in de F2 . Dit jaar zal het erom spannen of de F1 voor hem weggelegd is. Zelfs een Schumacher zal zich in de hoogste klasse moeten waarmaken.
