Marko sluit terugkeer Vettel uit: "Hij komt niet naast Verstappen te rijden"

Sebastian Vettel was vorige week zaterdag samen met de coureurs van Red Bull Racing en Scuderia Toro Rosso te gast bij de Hahnenkammrennen in Kitzbühel. Helmut Marko heeft een terugkeer van de Duitser bij Red Bull echter uitgesloten.

Vettel werd al op jonge leeftijd door Red Bull onder de vleugels genomen en groeide bij de energiedrankgigant uit tot een topcoureur in de Formule 1. Tussen 2010 en 2013 pakte hij vier keer de wereldtitel, maar na een teleurstellend verlopen 2014 vertrok de man uit Heppenheim naar Ferrari. Titels wist hij sindsdien niet meer te winnen, maar qua overwinningen staat Vettel al op de derde plaats aller tijden bij de Scuderia.

Na een lastig 2019, waarin Vettel het aflegde ten opzichte van teamgenoot Charles Leclerc, werd de Duitser in verband gebracht met een mogelijk vertrek bij Ferrari. Zijn contract bij de Scuderia loopt eind 2020 af en dus kan Vettel besluiten een nieuwe werkgever te zoeken. In die zoektocht hoeft Vettel geen rekening te houden met een plekje bij Red Bull Racing, zo maakte Marko duidelijk.

"Ik kan me, zeker na de contractverlenging van Max [Verstappen], niet voorstellen dat de twee V's samen bij ons rijden", vertelde Marko aan Motorsport-Magazin.com. "Alleen financieel gezien zou het al erg lastig worden." Daarmee wil de Oostenrijker niet zeggen dat Vettel qua snelheid niet goed genoeg is. "Als Sebastian zich op zijn gemak voelt - en een auto heeft die bij zijn rijstijl past - dan zit hij er absoluut bij."

Vettel 'houdt niet van politieke spellen'

De kwaliteiten van de coureur Vettel staan volgens Marko buiten kijf, maar de talentscout en adviseur van Red Bull ziet dat zijn voormalige protégé met name door één factor in de problemen lijkt te komen bij Ferrari: het politieke spel dat achter de schermen gespeeld wordt. Marko ziet dat Charles Leclerc op dat vlak een voorsprong heeft, mede door manager Nicolas Todt.

"Sebastian is een heel eerlijke atleet, die het liefste niet al te veel wil weten over politieke spelletjes. Hij wil ook niet in een gevecht verstrikt raken", zegt Marko. "Leclerc heeft wat dat betreft een voordeel met zijn manager Todt, die op al deze vlakken duidelijk erg goed is. Maar Vettel kan counteren met zijn performance."

De deurtjes worden bij RBR goed dicht gehouden voor de dure jongens. Geen Alonso, geen Vettel. Het moet uit het eigen opleidingsprogramma komen, maar Albon, Gasly en Kvyat gaan de oorlog niet winnen. Zelfs niet met een retesnelle RB16. Dus alle ballen op Max, Albon mag het daarachter opknappen.
Vettel moet dit jaar laten zien hoe snel hij is, en Gio moet vooral niet te hard z'n best doen. Anders is mij wel duidelijk wie er volgend jaar dienend mag rijden naast Leclerc. It ain't gonna be Vettel.

  De deurtjes worden bij RBR goed dicht gehouden voor de '(ex-)wereldkampioenen'. Ze willen natuurlijk niet dat verstappen weerstand krijgt. Want dan gaat Max weg.

Meestal als ome Helmut wat uitsluit gaat het juist wel gebeuren. Ik zou het graag zien hoor in 2021 als Albon tegenvalt.

  Vettel heeft al flink wat deuken opgelopen bij Ferrari, die heeft imo echt geen zin om door een nog steeds beter wordende Max naar huis te worden gereden op zijn ouwe dag.

RBR zet volledig in op Max, die heeft een lang en goed contract, voor de 2de rijder gaan ze niet iemand als Vettel er naast zetten. Ze hopen dat Albon nog wat beter zal worden, we gaan het zien.
