Magnussen hoopt op toekomst bij topteam in de Formule 1

Kevin Magnussen racet inmiddels al een aantal seizoenen in de middenmoot, maar hij heeft nog steeds de ambitie om door te groeien naar een topteam. Lukt dat niet, dan kan het zo zijn dat de Deen ermee ophoudt.

Magnussen begon zijn Formule 1-carrière in 2014 veelbelovend met een podiumplaats in zijn eerste Grand Prix. Tot nu toe bleek dat echter ook de enige keer dat de zoon van voormalig Formule 1-coureur Jan Magnussen het podium mocht betreden. Na een jaar langs de zijlijn in 2015 keerde Magnussen in 2016 terug in de middenmoot bij Renault, om voor 2017 de overstap naar Haas F1 te maken.

Magnussen begint nu aan zijn vierde seizoen in Amerikaanse dienst, maar het is niet zijn doel om nog jaren in de middenmoot te blijven rijden. Dat vertelde hij aan BT. "Het verschil wordt gemaakt als ik gedurende een langere periode boven mijn kunnen presteer, totdat ik hopelijk door een van de grote teams opgepikt word. Ik moet consistent zijn tot ik een deur kan openen."

Magnussen wil meer dan strijden om 'zevende positie'

Als er geen grote verrassing plaatsvindt, zal Magnussen in 2020 wederom in de middenmoot acteren. Dat houdt de Deense coureur nog wel een aantal jaren vol, maar het is niet het doel van de Haas F1-coureur om tot het einde van zijn carrière te strijden om de laatste plaatsen in de punten. "Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat ik al mijn goede jaren in de racerij doorbreng in de strijd om de zevende plaats."

"Als ik over 12 tot 15 jaar klaar ben met mijn carrière en mijn beste resultaat was een tweede plek, dan kan ik daar niet trots op zijn", stelt Magnussen. "Ik droom ook van het winnen van Le Mans of Daytona, maar de F1-droom is momenteel nog prominenter aanwezig. Ik moet echter wel toegeven dat er een moment komt dat ik niet langer geloof dat ik wereldkampioen kan worden, maar dat punt heb ik nu nog niet bereikt."

I'm afraid that ship has sailed...

Past overigens goed bij Haas vindt ik.
Bij een topteam zie ik hem niet snel de kans krijgen. De visie van RB is duidelijk, Mercedes heeft de luxe de toppers te kunnen aantrekken en bij Ferrari zitten ze ook niet op Kevin te wachten. Bij Mclaren & Renault gaan ze hem niet terugnemen denk ik ...en de overige teams zijn middenmoot.

  Dat denk ik ook. Lijkt een beetje op een zure poging de top teams te vragen hem aan boord te nemen. Echter ik denk ook niet dat dat gaat lukken. Dus... Doei Magnussen. Maak plaats voor een ander.

  Mooi omschreven! Als Kevin eens kritisch in de spiegel kijkt zal hij moeten begrijpen dat hij van geluk mag spreken met zijn zitje bij Haas en dat dit waarschijnlijk zijn laatste is in de F1

Kevin heeft al eerder aangegeven geen F1 meer willen rijden zonder kansen op podium.
Krijg beetje de buik vol van hem en volgens mij kan hij niet beter dan hij nu doet. Enige wat we van hem zullen missen zijn zijn soms scherpe uitspraken in de media.

  Hahahaha!! Magnussen vergelijken met Maldonado... ik wilde nog schrijven dat Magnussen 'lomp' is, maar vergelijken met Maldonado is vele malen diplomatieker én lachwekkender. "Ik verlaat de F1 niet voordat ik met Williams wereldkampioen ben geworden", ik hoor het hem nog zeggen toen hij volledig aan de dope zat na zijn enige geluksoverwinning.

Anders dan vele reacties hier, denk ik dat Magnussen minimaal het niveau Bottas is en bij een topteam races kan winnen, of op zijn minst podiumplekken kan scoren.
In de Haas, in het middenveld, is het met de ellebogen uit de auto racen om een positie te winnen, met alle risico's van dien. En dan deed de Haas het ook nog eens niet lekker vorig jaar. Daar kunnen we hem niet volledig op afrekenen.
Gaat een topteam hem echter een stoeltje aanbieden? Ik denk het niet.

  Helemaal mee eens.
  De afgelopen seizoenen, op de momenten dat de Haas auto goed was deed Magnussen het ook goed. Kwalificeert zich goed en is in de race vaak ook snel. De vergelijking met Bottas kan ik mij in vinden, met het verschil dat ik denk dat Magnussen veller aanvalt en verdedigt.
  
  Eigenlijk zou ik hem samen met Perez wel eens in een topteam willen zien.
  Beide in mijn ogen geen kampioenmateriaal, maar beide zouden denk ik leuk mee kunnen doen om de podia en zo nu en dan een overwinning.
