Laurent Mekies: "Sebastian Vettel sleutelfiguur in ons F1-project"

Sebastian Vettel heeft na zijn overstap van Red Bull Racing naar Ferrari nog steeds geen wereldtitel behaald. De Duitser behaalde vier titels op rij, maar na zijn overstap naar de Italianen gaat het nog niet goed. De coureur met nummer 5 geniet nog steeds van de volledige steun van Ferrari, volgens sportdirecteur Laurent Mekies.

Op het eerste gezicht heeft de viervoudige wereldkampioen zijn status bij het team uit Maranello verloren, terwijl Charles Leclerc met succes zijn nummer 1-status in 2019 afpakte en vervolgens een nieuwe 5-jarige deal veiligstelde. Het contract van de 32-jarige Vettel loopt daarentegen na dit seizoen af en heeft nog geen nieuwe aanbiedingen gekregen.

Maar de Fransman Mekies vertelde het Italiaanse tijdschrift Autosprint dat hij de Duitser nog steeds als een hele goede coureur ziet. "Hij heeft natuurlijk leiderschap in zijn DNA en is een sleutelfiguur in ons project. Hij is altijd in staat om de juiste woorden te vinden, hij is kalm en motiverend. Op papier, hoe langer je bij een coureur blijft, hoe meer je van hem krijgt, en ik zou op die manier over Sebastian spreken", zo vertelde Mekies.

Teamorders zullen beter worden bekeken

Hoewel Vettel 2019 begon als Ferrari's duidelijke nummer 1, waarschuwt teambaas Mattia Binotto dat hij en Leclerc die topstatus in 2020 zullen delen. Het ging al eens vaker mis tussen de twee vorig seizoen en daarom zal Binotto nu teamorders gaan uitvoeren, als dat nodig is. "Ze beginnen het seizoen op hetzelfde niveau, met het team als prioriteit nummer 1. Als er een punt in het seizoen komt waarin een van hen een groot voordeel heeft in het kampioenschap, dan zullen we ernaar kijken. In dat scenario zou het volkomen normaal en natuurlijk zijn om ons op een van hen te concentreren om onze kansen om te winnen te maximaliseren, maar voor nu is het te vroeg om erover na te denken", zo vertelde de Fransman.

  Nee, 'motiverend' dan. Zelden een meer uitgeblust mannetje gezien. Maar ik mag hopen dat ie dit seizoen weer es wat peper in z'n r..t toont, en dat ie de concentratie kan opbrengen om es een paar races foutloos te zijn. Ben geen fan van de man, maar dat zou het allemaal wel wat spannender maken en daar ben ik wel fan van.

Maar dan zou dit wel ook de reden kunnen zijn dat Ferrari een compleet nieuwe auto is gaan bouwen. Ik las laatst ergens dat Vettel met de vuist op rafel heeft geslagen en dat hij een auto wil hebben met een stabiele achterkant. De vraag is nu dan of ze deze echt voor hem gaan bouwen, want dan klopt het verhaal van Mekies. Maar het nu was de Ferrari ook niet de beste auto kwa downforce. Dus ben echt benieuwd of de nieuwe auto aan de wensen van Vettel gaat aansluiten en wat hij dan laat zien. Dit jaar zal bepalend worden voor hem, dat is al meermaals gezegd. En wat betreft teamorders, dat is waar Ferrari vaker de fout in is gegaan. In Rusland deden ze het fout en in Brazilië hadden ze een teamorder moeten uitspreken.
