Schuberth verklaart aantrekken Verstappen: "Voelde dat er wat ging gebeuren"

Max Verstappen verraste vorig jaar na de wintertests door van helmleverancier te wisselen en een avontuur met Schuberth aan te gaan. CEO Alberto Dall'Oglio heeft nu een inkijkje gegeven in hoe de Nederlander verleid werd tot die overstap.

Jarenlang nam Verstappen zijn helmen af bij Arai, het bedrijf dat al sinds de jaren '90 helmen leverde aan vader Jos Verstappen. Aan die samenwerking kwam begin 2019 echter een einde. Max Verstappen vond de nieuwe helm van Arai, extreem oncomfortabel en bovendien kampte het merk met problemen rond het homologeren van de nieuwe helm. Schuberth rook bloed en sloeg vervolgens toe.

Tijdens de wintertests in Barcelona kwam Verstappen plotseling met een helm van Schuberth op de baan. De SF3 was volgens Dall'Oglio net voor de FIA-deadline gehomologeerd toen de wintertests voor de deur stonden. "Ik vertelde Sven [Krieter] dat we een aantal reservehelmen mee moesten nemen. Ik voelde dat er wat ging gebeuren", vertelde Dall'Oglio aan Formule1.nl.

'Verstappen bron van inspiratie voor Schuberth'

Verstappen kon tijdens de test niet met zijn eigen maat van de Arai-helmen rijden door de problemen bij de Japanse helmmaker, maar de helm van Schuberth viel in de smaak bij de Nederlander. Daarna volgden onderhandelingen voor een permanente overstap naar de Italiaanse helmmaker en daaruit bleek dat het kamp rond Verstappen daar wel oren naar had.

"Toen ik een week later aan het hardlopen was, belde de manager van Verstappen mij: ze gingen akkoord", zegt Dall'Oglio. "Ik kon ze alleen maar bedanken, zowel door het hardlopen als door de grootte van deze deal. Dit was onze beloning voor een jaar vol stress en hard werken. Dat we nu werken voor een van de grootste coureurs van dit moment is een grote bron van inspiratie. Iedereen bij Schuberth is net zo gepassioneerd en wil winnen. We zien ons ook allemaal als lid van de racewereld, en dat komt door Max."

Het interne deel en carbon-ontwikkeling wordt door Teca25 gedaan, dat in Italië zit. Ik kan me voorstellen dat zij het voortouw nemen als het gaat om specifieke racehelmen voor F1.

Newey schijnt een voorkeur te hebben voor Arai en daar ook de auto voor te ontwerpen. Ik ben benieuwd of hieromtrent aanpassingen hebben plaatsgevonden. Newey die vanaf nu rekening houdt met Schubert (lijkt me niet), Schubert dat de helm meer richting de Arai-vorm maakt of een combinatie van beiden.

Albon reed vorig jaar iig nog met Arai. En volgens mij heeft Arai ook een commerciële deal met RBR en heeft Verstappen echt een vrijstelling gekregen om zelf zijn helm te kiezen...

  Waarom zou Newey geen rekening houden met de vorm van de helm van hun eerste rijder? Of hij nu een voorkeur heeft voor Arai of niet, hij designed die auto zodat Max ermee kan winnen. Dat dat vorig jaar vanwege de laatste wissel niet zo was is duidelijk. En dat het effectief geen grote ramp zal zijn, ook. We hebben het over een fractie van een fractie van een fractie van een seconde, at best.

  Op elk type, en merk helm kan je wel wat flipjes en flapjes monteren om de luchtstroom die verrekte airbox in te krijgen. Als het ding maar lekker zit, en je er geen pien in de harses van krijgt is er niks aan het handje.

  ik weet niet op welke fysieke deel hij op jos lijkt of op zijn moeder, maar jos die kon sweeeten :) dus een goed helm is belangrijk. zo'n shumacher moment met jos , shumacher had geen druppel sweet..

  @Aiii Omdat Newey een heel eigen idee heeft van hoe een ontwerp zou moeten zijn en erom bekend staat hier geen compromissen omtrent te willen doen. Zelfs als het gaat om zaken als onderdelen die gemonteerd moeten worden, houdt hij hier amper rekening mee. De mensen die daarvoor zijn, lossen het maar op. Marc Priestley heeft dit ooit eens aangegeven.
