Wolff maakt einde aan geruchten: "Vertrek Mercedes uit F1 is onzin"

Toto Wolff heeft een einde gemaakt aan de geruchten dat Mercedes aan het eind van 2020 uit de Formule 1 vertrekt. Moederbedrijf Daimler wil zich juist ook op langere termijn concentreren op de koningsklasse van de autosport.

De afgelopen maanden gonsde het van de geruchten over de toekomst van Mercedes in de Formule 1. Het Duitse fabrieksteam zou, mede door bezuinigingen bij moederbedrijf Daimler, na afloop van het seizoen 2020 misschien wel uit de Formule 1 stappen. Die mogelijkheid is er ook, omdat de huidige afspraken tussen Mercedes en de commerciële rechtenhouder eind 2020 aflopen.

Tijdens de bekendmaking van de vijfjarige sponsorovereenkomst met chemiebedrijf INEOS en de onthulling van de nieuwe livery maakte Wolff echter duidelijk dat Mercedes de komende jaren in de Formule 1 actief blijft. Zoals altijd zijn we voor de lange termijn betrokken. De F1 biedt ons merk een geweldig marketingplatform. Dit is waar we mee bezig zijn: we bouwen racewagens en personenauto's."

"De F1 is hét platform voor hybrides. Dat wordt niet duidelijk genoeg gecommuniceerd en de nadruk moet daar juist meer op komen te liggen. Wij houden van dit platform, maar tegelijkertijd onderhandelen we nog met de rechtenhouders en moeten er dingen opgelost worden. Deze samenwerking geeft echter duidelijk onze wens aan om ons succesvolle avontuur in de F1 voort te zetten."

Wolff wil van Mercedes winstgevend F1-team maken

Wolff benadrukt dat Daimler de waarde van de Formule 1 inziet en bovendien ook voldoende terugziet van de investering die men in de sport doet. Bovendien biedt het budgetplafond vanaf 2021 een mogelijkheid waardoor het mogelijk wordt om van een Formule 1-team een winstgevende onderneming te maken. Dat is volgens Wolff ook het doel dat hij, Mercedes en Daimler voor ogen hebben.

De Oostenrijker haalt daarvoor inspiratie uit de Amerikaanse sportcompetities, waar een salarisplafond ervoor zorgt dat de kosten gedrukt worden. "We willen dat de cijfers het een open deur maken om mee te doen. We zien dat de NFL-en NBA-teams winstgevende franchises zijn en het is mijn persoonlijke doel om dit met onze partners ook voor elkaar te krijgen, zodat deelnemen een evidentie is", aldus Wolff.

In alle redelijkheid: ik betwijfel of Wolff de eindverantwoordelijke is over het financiele beleid.
Dit zal allemaal wel overlegd zijn tot op zekere hoogte en met een bepaalde tijdslimiet, maar vast en zeker onder voorwaarden.
Als het bestuur straks toch wat anders wil, dan zie je het wel.

Zou ik ook zeggen mocht ik meer dan 1000 medewerkers gerust moeten stellen.

Maar ik geloof hem ook wel en ik hoop dat Mercedes dan ook blijft.
De F1 is al dun gezaaid voor wat de febrieksteam betreft.

Er blijven 2 risico's om de hoek loeren: de budgetcaps en de voltooing er van alsook de potentieel toenemende populariteit van de FE.
