Verstappen: "Ben geen rookie meer, maar verbeter mezelf nog wel"

Max Verstappen beleefde in 2019 zijn meest succesvolle jaar in de Formule 1, maar ook het jaar waarin hij zijn foutenlast het beste wist te beperken. Dat ziet hij als onderdeel van een natuurlijke ontwikkeling die hij doormaakt.

Na het vertrek van Daniel Ricciardo werd Verstappen gedwongen om Red Bull Racing echt op sleeptouw te nemen in 2019. Dat deed de Nederlander goed met onder andere drie overwinningen en twee pole positions. Ook beperkte de Limburger het aantal fouten dat hij gedurende het seizoen maakte. Dat schrijft Verstappen zelf toe aan het feit dat hij de afgelopen jaren nog fouten maakte, die andere coureurs in bijvoorbeeld de Formule 2 maakte.

"Ik ben absoluut geen rookie meer. Ik heb natuurlijk maar één jaar F3 gereden, en de sprong naar de Formule 1 was groot daarna. Ik denk dus dat je een aantal fouten maakt die anderen misschien gemaakt hebben in de Formule 2 of waar ze ook reden, zoals de [Formule Renault] 3.5 destijds. Maar ik word nog steeds beter."

Minder volgen, meer initiatief nemen

Ook in het op sleeptouw nemen van Red Bull ging Verstappen goed af. Hij scoorde het gros van de punten van het Oostenrijkse team en zag halverwege het seizoen een nieuwe teamgenoot komen: Pierre Gasly werd vervangen door Alexander Albon. Verstappen beschrijft hoe zijn rol binnen het team veranderd is: eerst volgde hij zijn meer ervaren teamgenoot Ricciardo nog, nu is hij zelf leidend in het afstellen van zijn auto.

"Toen ik net bij Red Bull Racing kwam, luisterde ik eerst vooral naar Daniel en daarna volgde ik zijn richting. Natuurlijk heb je je eigen rijstijl, dus je doet het altijd toch wat anders. Maar ik wist niet wat bepaalde dingen op de auto konden doen, omdat het anders was dan bij Toro Rosso. Door de jaren heen heb ik echter geleerd wat ik wil van de auto en wat we daarvoor gaan veranderen.

Hopelijk is de RB16 wat makkelijker in het window te krijgen en te houden, volgens mij was de vorige wagen best een ‘diva’ wat dat betreft...

Max had natuurlijk ook 2x een onervaren teamgenoot vorig jaar dus alle input kwam bij hem vandaan waardoor men wellicht minder snel de juiste afstelling vond.

  @Mika, de wagen was idd een "diva". Heel moeilijk om in het juiste window te krijgen. Zelfs met Max zijn input, want die is volgens de engineers heel erg goed. Dat zal hopelijk dit jaar beter zijn, dat diva gedrag.

Ben zelf ook geen rookie meer, maar zie ook niets meer te verbeteren aan mezelf.
Heb het dan ook opgegeven. ;-)
Goed dat Max nog opties heeft / ziet.
Eerst maar eens afwachten wat de RB16 voor opties heeft (meegekregen) en dat daar een beetje bandbreedte in zit.

Dan komen er ongetwijfeld races, waarin de winst er niet in zit. Het vlak waarop hij in míjn optiek nog kan leren en stappen moet zetten, is dergelijke races 'gewoon ' 12 of 15 puntjes mee naar huis te nemen.

Ook al willen wij dat als fans misschien helemaal niet zien en laten we ons liever verwennen met een gewaagde en spectaculaire actie voor de winst, dit is wel de manier. Gezien de intervieuws die ik de laatste weken gelezen heb, is dat besef eens te meer aanwezig bij Max en RB.

  Maak je maar geen zorgen, als hij echt titelmeteriaal heeft dan hoeft hij ook niet meer 110% uit dat ding te halen. dan rijdt hij dat ding gewoon op zijn gemakkie naar huis.

  Aha, dus als ik jou goed begrijp heeft Max aan een auto die 90% zo goed is als die van Ferrari of Mercedes, genoeg om WDC te worden;)
  
  Altijd handig die topsporters die maar zo 10% over de 100 heengaan;)

  100 dan. Maar ja hij gaat alleen last van Hamilton krijgen in een ietsje mindere wagen/motor dan Mercedes/Ferrari. dan heb ik het over 0.200/0.300 achterstand. In gelijkwaardig materiaal kunnen ze natuurlijk allemaal inpakken :p
