Berger: "Complete coureur Verstappen kan voor opschudding zorgen in de top"

Na een ijzersterk seizoen in 2019 is Max Verstappen volgens Gerhard Berger klaar voor de strijd om de titel. De Oostenrijker vindt de coureur van Red Bull Racing als individu 'helemaal compleet'.

In 2019 kende Verstappen zijn beste seizoen tot nu toe in de Formule 1. Hij wist zijn foutenlast voor een groot deel te beperken en dat resulteerde onder andere in drie overwinningen, negen podiumplaatsen en twee pole positions. Aan het eind van het seizoen bezette de Nederlander dan ook de derde positie in het kampioenschap, achter Mercedes-coureurs Lewis Hamilton en Valtteri Bottas.

De tijd van ervaring opdoen is nu voorbij voor Verstappen, stelt Berger in gesprek met Motorsport.com. "Verstappen is een interessant figuur en hij komt nu echt sterk opzetten. Tot nu toe draaide het voor hem vooral om het opdoen van zoveel mogelijk ervaring. Ik denk echter wel dat hij nu helemaal compleet is als coureur. Hij is agressief en begint nu aan zijn beste jaren, want die gasten zijn allemaal nog ongelooflijk jong."

Verstappen heeft 'extra stap' van Honda nodig

Met 'die gasten' doelt Berger op de jonge generatie topcoureurs die zich in de afgelopen jaren heeft aangediend. Naast Verstappen maakten ook Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz en Lando Norris afgelopen jaar indruk met hun snelheid. Qua ervaring heeft Verstappen, die aan zijn zesde seizoen in de Formule 1 begint, wel de overhand ten opzichte van zijn leeftijdsgenoten.

Berger denkt dan ook dat Verstappen degene is die komend jaar de gevestigde orde echt aan kan vallen. De tienvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar weet echter wel dat Verstappen dat niet alleen kan. Hij ziet de ontwikkeling van motorleverancier Honda ook als een belangrijk ingrediënt in de strijd om de top aan te vallen. "Als Honda dit jaar een extra stap kan zetten, dan is hij van alle jonge honden de eerste die in de top echt voor opschudding gaat zorgen."

Alles ligt ook aan wat de rest op zijn kerfstok heeft en wat Mercedes en Ferrari uit de hoge hoed laat komen!

  Klopt maar je moet gewoon zorgen dat je geen hele grote achterstand hebt. Dat is een must. Max doet de rest wel.
  
  De wagen moet gelijk ´goed voelen´ zoals Max dat altijd zegt. Honda moet betrouwbaar zijn(wel vertrouwen in) en nog wat vinden. Toch wel een aantal dingen nog die allemaal goed moeten vallen. Ik denk bij Ferrari hetzelfde verhaal. Mercedes zal het wel gewoon weer vanaf het begin voor elkaar hebben dus je moet er gelijk staan.

Hoop dat RBR/Honda/Max Maximaal uit de startblokken komen op 15/3 liefst een grandslam en na een race of 4 weten we hoe de bolide van Max ervoor staat t.o.v. Merc en Fer. Spannond! ???
