Key: "McLaren heeft zwaktes aangepakt die alle teams in middenmoot hebben"

McLaren heeft een duidelijk doel voor 2020 en dat is op zijn minst de vierde plaats bij de constructeurs vasthouden. Om dat te bereiken, heeft het ontwerpteam bij de MCL35 een aantal zwakke plekken aangepakt waarmee de meeste teams in de middenmoot kampen.

De MCL35 is de eerste McLaren die onder leiding van technisch directeur James Key is ontworpen. In grote lijnen is de bolide, die donderdag in het McLaren Technology Centre werd gepresenteerd, een doorontwikkeling van de MCL34 uit 2019, maar op een groot aantal punten zijn er forse ontwikkelingen geweest. Met name de neus, de sidepods en het slanke pakket van de bolide vallen op.

Qua doelstelling wil Key de lat niet te hoog leggen voor McLaren. "Je moet een doel hebben om naartoe te werken, omdat je een soort van uit moet vinden waar je moet zijn. Een van deze dingen is om naar het front te komen, maar in vergelijking met waar we nu zijn, is dat een enorme stap. Het zou welkom zijn om dat in één jaar te doen, maar het is een enorme stap", vertelt hij tegenover Motorsport.com.

Vierde positie behouden belangrijkste doelstelling

Key benadrukt dat McLaren met de MCL35 een aantal vlakken heeft aangepakt waarop de teams in de middenmoot in 2019 niet uitblonken in vergelijking met de top. "Er waren bepaalde doelen gesteld op basis van wat we vorig jaar hebben geleerd, waar we onze zwakke plekken gevonden hebben die we echt aan wilden pakken."

"We zagen dat een aantal van deze zwakke punten speelden bij alle teams waar we mee streden, zeker in vergelijking met de drie grotere teams. Naar dit soort vlakken hebben we heel nauwkeurig gekeken, en daar hebben we progressie geboekt. Het doel voor de middellange termijn is om onze positie vast te houden en hopelijk het gat iets te verkleinen. Als we in die positie zitten, dan denk ik dat we ons realistische doel bereiken."

  Erg Benieuwd wat Key kan bij een ander team met wat meer budget.
  In het verleden haalde hij al puike resultaten bij Sauber met de C31.
  Bij Toro Rosso had ik het idee dat vooral het budget daar het struikelblok was voor Key maar meestal toch een auto ontwierp die goed mee kon in de middenmoot.

Op basis van foto's is het altijd lastig om te voorspellen, maar voor zover dat wel kan vind ik deze McLaren er echt heel goed uitzien en denk ik dat ze misschien wel het gat met de top 3 teams een stuk kleiner hebben gemaakt.
