Kubica over operatie DTM en Formule 1: "Het zal een hele lastige klus worden"

Robert Kubica gaat een druk jaar krijgen, zo bevestigde hij. Op donderdag werd aangekondigd dat hij met sponsor PKN Orlen zijn rol als reserve-coureur bij Alfa Romeo, gaat combineren met een volledig DTM-seizoen. De 35-jarige Kubica zal racen met een BMW-auto die particulier wordt gerund door ART Grand Prix.

De Pool kon zichzelf vorig seizoen in de Formule 1 niet bewijzen. Hij had moeite met het sturen, door de gevolgen van zijn ernstige rally-ongeval in 2011. De Pool keerde vorig seizoen na negen jaar afwezigheid, mede door een inferieure Williams weinig succesvol terug in de Formule 1: "Vorig jaar verliep niet zoals we hadden gepland. Ik blijf in de Formule 1 en kan nog steeds racen.”

Hij vertelde Przeglad Sportowy echter dat 2020 niet gemakkelijk zal zijn. "Ik ben me ervan bewust dat ons een moeilijke taak wacht om het DTM- en Formule 1-seizoen te combineren. Het zal logistiek een grote uitdaging zijn. Het is 10 weekenden in de DTM plus 18 weekenden voor mij in de Formule 1 en daarnaast tests en simulatiedagen met Alfa Romeo. Het is veel en ik zal eigenlijk niet meer thuiskomen, maar mijn passie en de mogelijkheid om op het hoogste niveau te racen geeft me energie."

Kubica hoopt op een beter seizoen

Orlen, een grote Poolse oliemaatschappij, zal niet alleen de DTM-stoel van Kubica sponsoren en zijn auto voorzien van een rode en witte kleurstelling, het is ook de titelsponsor bij Alfa Romeo in de F1. "Vanuit het bedrijfsleven en de sportieve kant staat ons een moeilijke taak te wachten, maar ik denk dat we het aankunnen. Ik hoop dat ik in een betere stemming van de races weg zal gaan dan vorig jaar", glimlachte hij.

Ik denk dat hij door vorig jaar eindelijk F1 heeft kunnen afsluiten in zijn hoofd en daarmee ook eindelijk een contact heeft weten te bemachtigen in een andere klasse. Kreeg veel aanbiedingen in GT racerij maar altijd afgeslagen met F1 in het achterhoofd en nu is die toch gelukkig gaan racen in andere klasse. Persoonlijk denk ik dat DTM zich op glad ijs begeeft... Zonder nieuwe fabrikant is het byebye DTM

  De DTM zal gaan fuseren met het Japanse GT kampioenschap, en daardoor juist een mondiaal toonaangevende klasse gaan worden. Laat Gerhard Berger maar schuiven, die weet echt wel wat hij doet.
