Latifi en Stroll rijden dit jaar met een Amerikaanse licentie

De Canadezen Nicholas Latifi en Lance Stroll zullen dit jaar met een Amerikaanse licentie aan de start van de Grands Prix verschijnen.

Tijdens de wintertests in Barcelona kreeg de redactie van GPToday.net een tip over de problemen die de Canadese autosportbond heeft nadat men in december 2019 zich officieel terugtrok als licentieverstrekker van de FIA. Beide Canadese coureurs op de grid, Stroll en Latifi, reden gedurende hun hele loopbaan met deze Canadese licentie.

Bij de aanvraag van de superlicentie van Nicholas Latifi begin dit jaar, moest het Canadese-kamp van de Williams-coureur een ad hoc beslissing maken om in aanmerking te komen voor een licentie. Aangezien de Canadese bond en de FIA officieel geen partners meer zijn, besloot het kamp Latifi uit te wijken naar de Verenigde Staten.

"Ik hoorde al vrij snel wat er gaande was", sprak de Williams-coureur. "We wisten dat er moeilijkheden waren tussen met Canadese ASN (autosportbond) omtrent het afgeven van een licentie. Ik heb deze Canadese licentie nodig om een superlicentie te kunnen aanvragen."

"Het was best wel een verrassing voor ons. Maar uiteindelijk gaat het erom dat ik met de Canadese vlag achter mijn naam aan de start kan komen van het nieuwe Formule 1-seizoen. Daarnaast is het natuurlijk geweldig dat er vanaf dit seizoen twee coureurs uit Canada aan de start staan bij de races", sloot Latifi af.

We hebben al een Zwitser met een Franse licentie, een Belg met een Nederlandse licentie en een Brit met een Thaise licentie, dus dit kan er ook nog wel bij.

  We hebben geen Balg met een Nederlandse licantie. We hebben een Nederlanders Met een Nederlandse licentie. Max heeft gekozen voor de Nederlands nationaliteit toen hij 18 werd. Daarvoor had hij een Belgiës paspoort. Maar op je 18e moet je een keuze maken omdat Max een Nederlandse vader heeft. Max had dus ook voor een Belgische nationaliteit kunnen kiezen. Maar hij heeft dus gekozen voor NL. En is hij dus gewoon een Nederlander. Tis nie moeilijk, tis gemakkelijk :-)

  Het feit dat je ergens geboren bent, wil nog niet zeggen dat je die nationaliteit hebt.

  Op je 18de moet je helemaal geen keuze maken in België. En daarbij kan je kiezen voor beide nationaliteiten (wat Max ook gedaan heeft).

  Niet alleen dat. Als je geboren bent in België en één van de ouders is Belg, krijg je automatisch de Belgische nationaliteit.
