Renault moet in 2022 meedoen om podiumplekken

Het team van Renault moet in 2022, het eerste jaar onder de nieuwe reglementen in de Formule 1, meedoen om de podiumplaatsen. Die doelstelling formuleert teambaas Cyril Abiteboul in gesprek met Autocar. Renault heeft sinds 2016 weer een eigen fabrieksteam en in de eerste paar seizoenen klom de renstal op naar een plek achter de top drie, maar sindsdien stagneert de opmars.

Abiteboul heeft er weinig fiducie in dat Renault de komende anderhalve jaar het bastion van de drie grootmachten Mercedes, Ferrari en Red Bull Racing weet binnen te dringen, maar de introductie van de nieuwe regels in 2022 biedt mogelijkheden. "We kunnen ons niet voor altijd blijven verschuilen. De verwachtingen moeten echter wel realistisch en redelijk blijven. Maar als we in 2022 niet meedoen om podiumplaatsen, dan kunnen we ons nergens achter verbergen. We gaan er niet vanuit dat we zullen domineren, maar strijden voor podiumplekken is het doel."

Over het afgelopen seizoen, waarin Renault met pijn en moeite de vierde plek in het constructeurskampioenschap wist te consolideren, is de Fransman duidelijk. "Dat was ronduit teleurstellend, anders kan ik het niet omschrijven. De drie jaar daarvoor hadden we een mooie stijgende lijn te pakken en met Daniel Ricciardo als nieuwe coureur achter het stuur hadden we die in 2019 graag doorgetrokken, maar dat is niet gelukt."

Toekomst Renault

De ambities voor 2022 zijn in elk geval een indicatie dat Renault ook de komende jaren aan de Formule 1 verbonden blijft, al moet ook de auto-industrie in de huidige crisis flinke klappen incasseren. Abiteboul: "We zijn al 42 jaar in een of andere vorm in de Formule 1 actief. Oké, dat is niet altijd een constante geweest en in de leiding van Renault is ook het een en ander veranderd, maar de realiteit is dat we een stevig fundament neergelegd hebben met fabrieken in Enstone en Viry-Chatillon en we hebben een groep van zeker 1.200 medewerkers."

"De nieuwe Concorde Agreement gaat de goede kant op en er komen nieuwe reglementen aan die positief zijn voor ons. De richting die de sport opgaat bevalt ons wel. Natuurlijk heeft de auto-industrie het moeilijk, maar is het voor Renault zwaarder dan voor Mercedes-moederbedrijf Daimler? Ik betwijfel het. De Formule 1 is waardevol voor ons en dat neemt straks alleen maar toe. Het is nu aan ons om ons potentieel te benutten, te beginnen bij de performance. Als we beter zouden presteren, zouden we minder van dit soort vragen krijgen."

Moet m'n tong afbijten om niet cynisch te doen over deze uitspraak van Abiteboul. Hopelijk gaat Renault dan inderdaad leveren. Wordt tijd dat de top breder wordt.

Afgelopen seizoen zijn ze toch een soort van onofficieel 3e geworden als je vals spelende teams niet meetelt. Renault heeft weliswaar ook vals gespeeld maar daar is men voor bestraft.
