Fernando Alonso: "Start Indycar-seizoen in mei optimistisch"

Fernando Alonso acht het niet heel erg waarschijnlijk dat het IndyCar-seizoen eind mei van start kan gaan. De wereldwijde uitbraak van het coronavirus heeft ervoor gezorgd dat de organisatie al meerdere races heeft moeten uitstellen, waardoor het weekend in Detroit op 30 en 31 mei nu als opening van het seizoen staat. De vraag is echter of dat haalbaar is.

Alonso zou in mei eigenlijk aan de Indy 500 meedoen, maar dat evenement is reeds verplaatst naar 23 augustus. De Spanjaard denkt er het zijne van dat de IndyCar nog mikt op Detroit voor de opening van het seizoen. "Het is lastig voor te stellen dat de eerste race voor 30 mei op het programma staat. Hopelijk kan het gewoon doorgaan, maar dat is misschien een beetje optimistisch gedacht."

"Mijn plannen waren om eerst in de simulator in Charlotte plaats te nemen en dan dit weekend de race op Barber Motorsports Park bijwonen. Vervolgens zou ik me op de voorbereiding voor de Indy 500 storten. Nu gebeurt er niks in mei en hoop ik iedereen in augustus te zien. Ik ga met McLaren uitvogelen hoe de kalender in elkaar steekt en wanneer de nieuwe simulatorsessies bij Chevrolet zijn. We staan op standby, net als iedereen. We wachten het thuis af en proberen zo fit mogelijk te blijven."
