Sergio Perez: "Snelste generatie F1-auto's aller tijden"

Racing Point-coureur Sergio Perez staat te popelen om van start te gaan met het Formule 1-seizoen. De Mexicaan bevindt zich gedurende deze lockdown in het luxe strandresort Punta Mita in Mexico, maar hij zou veel liever in de cockpit van zijn RP20 kruipen. De auto die Racing Point deze winter ontwikkeld heeft gooide immers hoge ogen tijdens de voorbereidingstests.

Perez is dan ook razend benieuwd naar hoe de RP20 zich in de races tot de overige wagens zou verhouden. "Ik belde laatst met teambaas Otmar Szafnauer en hoofdengineer Tom McCullough. Voor het eerst in onze carrières zouden we met een competitieve bolide aan een seizoen beginnen. We weten niet hoe competitief precies, maar de snelheid in de tests was veelbelovend. Dat Melbourne niet door kon gaan, wetende dat we een sterk pakket hebben, was erg pijnlijk. Maar het zijn voor iedereen pijnlijke tijden. We moeten verenigd en eensgezind blijven."

Niet alleen de RP20, maar alle auto's gaan harder dan er ooit is gegaan in de Formule 1. Perez: "We besturen de snelste generatie Formule 1-auto's aller tijden. De snelheden waarmee we door de bochten gaan, zijn bijna niet voor te stellen. Het lijkt niet eens op voorgaande jaren. De kwalificatierondes, met lichte auto's in optimale conditie, worden waanzinnig. We gaan alle ronderecords breken met deze wagens, het zijn de beste auto's ooit."

Mischien wel de snelste auto's. Maar ik twijfel of deze auto's de mooiste races opleveren. Volgens de coureurs kun je nauwelijks achter elkaar rijden door de luchtstromen.

  Zit net Spanje 1996 terug te kijken. Die Ferrari is voor mij de laatste echt mooie F1 auto. Heb de hoge neuzen altijd minder gevonden.
