Daniil Kvyat was 'zeker niet gelukkig' met promotie Alexander Albon

Scuderia Alpha Tauri-coureur Daniil Kvyat moest vorig jaar wel even slikken toen Red Bull besloot om Alexander Albon de voorkeur te geven boven hem voor promotie naar hoofdmacht Red Bull Racing. Dat gaf de Rus toe in de Formule 1-podcast 'Beyond the Grid'. "Laat ik het zo zeggen, ik was er zeker niet gelukkig mee", bekende Kvyat.

Hij begreep in eerste instantie niet waarom ze voor Albon kozen en niet hem een herkansing gaven. Kvyat: "Ik kan niet zeggen dat ik de beslissing volledig begreep en het er compleet mee eens was toen ik hoorde van de ruil tussen Albon en Pierre Gasly." Inmiddels heeft hij zich ermee verzoend, dit is hoe Red Bull te werk gaat. "Ik had reeds voor Red Bull Racing gereden en ze wilden vers bloed."

Het is al heel wat dat Kvyat nog in de buurt kwam van een herkansing. Daar zag het eind 2017 namelijk niet naar uit. Vroeg in het seizoen 2016 had Red Bull hem al teruggezet naar opleidingsteam Scuderia Toro Rosso om Max Verstappen door te schuiven naar de hoofdmacht. Anderhalf jaar later maakte hij geen deel meer uit van het Formule 1-programma van de energiedrankenfabrikant.

Zijn Formule 1-loopbaan hing aan een zijden draadje, laat Kvyat weten. Een testrol bij Ferrari wakkerde het heilige vuur in hem weer aan. "Ik mocht een keer testen op Fiorano en dat was zeer emotioneel voor mij. Ferrari, Fiorano en de auto van 2018, dat was erg cool. Bovendien had ik al bijna zes maanden niet meer gereden. Ik genoot er zo enorm van dat ik besefte dat ik koste wat het kost terug wilde keren in de Formule 1. Dit is wat ik wil doen, dit is waar ik goed in ben."

Kvyat had opties buiten de Formule 1 voor 2019, maar hij was volledig gefocust op een rentree in de koningsklasse van de autosport. "Ik had het gevoel dat ik onafgemaakte zaken had in de Formule 1. Er waren gesprekken met teams uit andere klasses, maar ik wilde alleen maar in de Formule 1 rijden. Ik dacht al aan stoppen met racen als we geen Formule 1-deal uit het vuur zouden slepen."

Geweldig leuke gozer vind ik. Hoewel hij uitstekend meerdere talen spreekt en zelfs beter Engels spreekt dan Russisch krijg ik altijd zo’n Arnold “I’ll be back” gevoel bij hem als hij praat.
In zijn jaar naast Danny Ric deed hij amper tot niks onder voor hem. Wel heeft hij te vaak gekke momenten waarin hij wild en ongecontroleerd lijkt/is.
Ik vrees dan ook dat het na dit jaar exit is voor Blyat Kvyat.

Kijk, dit is nieuws! Dat had echt niemand verwacht, toch? Echt iedereen had de idee dat Kvyat helemaal niet naar RBR wilde, toch?

  Dat maakt men er van omdat men de uitspraak maar niet goed krijgt. Eigenlijk heet hij Danil Kvjat, maar in zijn tijd in de opstapklassen had men het ook vaak over Kyvat. Waarschijnlijk heeft ie het opgegeven toen men er Kieviat van maakt (alsof het om een kruising tussen een weidevogel en een italiaanse auto ging)
