Formule 1 opent deur voor circuits die niet op kalender stonden

De kans is aanwezig dat de herziene Formule 1-kalender voor 2020 enkele racelocaties bevat die niet op het oorspronkelijke schema stonden. Dat heeft Formule 1-baas Chase Carey in een conference call met verschillende media bekendgemaakt. De koningsklasse van de autosport werkt koortsachtig aan een nieuw rooster nadat het coronavirus de originele kalender in de war heeft geschopt.

De eerste tien races van de oorspronkelijke kalender zijn reeds uitgesteld of geannuleerd. Chase Carey en Ross Brawn zijn druk bezig om voor de uitgestelde Grands Prix een nieuwe datum te zoeken, terwijl ze ook naar circuits en locaties kijken die eigenlijk niet in de plannen voor 2020 voorkwamen. Zo hopen ze toch een waardig Formule 1-seizoen samen te stellen.

Chase Carey: "We hebben sinds Australië onvermoeibaar gewerkt en samen met de promotors zijn we actief bezig om een potentiële kalender voor het seizoen 2020 te formeren. Daarbij stuiten we op twee grote uitdagingen; het identificeren van locaties waar we kunnen racen en vaststellen hoe we alle betrokken partijen en hun materiaal naar die locaties kunnen vervoeren."

"Wij zijn in overleg met al onze promotors. Daarnaast staan we in contact met enkele circuits die niet op de oorspronkelijke kalender voor 2020 stonden. Op die manier proberen we alle mogelijke opties te verkennen." De Formule 1 zocht zelf toenadering tot bijvoorbeeld de Hockenheimring, die voor dit jaar buiten de boot viel. Daarnaast hebben circuits als Portimao (nog nooit een Formule 1-race georganiseerd) en Imola (in het verleden gastheer van de Grand Prix van San Marino) zich beschikbaar gesteld, terwijl ook Sepang (foto) in Maleisië een optie zou zijn.

Zandvoort

Dat de Formule 1 met alle promotors overleg voert, wekt bevreemding. Zandvoort-directeur Robert van Overdijk gaf vorige week nog aan niet benaderd te zijn door FOM voor het inhalen van de Grand Prix van Nederland. De eerste Formule 1-race op Circuit Zandvoort had op 3 mei plaats moeten vinden, maar kon door de corona-uitbraak niet doorgaan.

  In combinatie met een uitgestelde 24h zou dat ook nog best een optie kunnen zijn. De WEC de ene week en de F1 een week ervoor of na.

Dus ze kijken nu welk circuit het minste kost om te racen, daar is Zandvoort lekker mee, en 2021 moet je ook nog maar zien wat ervan terecht gaat komen.
