Video: Formule 1 staat stil bij het overlijden van Niki Lauda

Het is vandaag precies een jaar geleden dat Niki Lauda overleed. Op social media staan de Formule 1 en de diverse teams, partners, leveranciers en Grands Prix stil bij het overlijden van de markante Oostenrijker. Op 20 mei 2019 kwam er op 70-jarige leeftijd een einde aan het leven van Lauda, nadat hij na een dubbele longtransplantatie al enige tijd in het ziekenhuis verbleef.

Lauda werd als coureur drie keer wereldkampioen in de Formule 1; in 1975 en 1977 met Ferrari en in 1984 met McLaren. In totaal reed hij 177 Grands Prix, waar hij er 25 van wist te winnen. In 1976 beleefde hij een horrorcrash op de oude Nürburgring waarbij zijn auto in brand vloog en hij ternauwernood aan de dood wist te ontsnappen. Na zijn actieve carrière stortte Lauda zich op andere projecten, zoals onder meer een eigen vliegmaatschappij.

Ook ging hij een rol als analist van Formule 1-races vertolken en de laatste jaren was hij als compagnon van Toto Wolff bij Mercedes betrokken. De Duitse renstal heeft nu ook een mooie video geproduceerd ter nagedachtenis aan Lauda.

    De eer gehad om een fotootje met hem te maken. En daar nog heel trots op! Keek laatste week veel video's en interviews terug. Genot om naar te luisteren.

    Mooi MArnoldi; het was m'n eerste hero, als jaren 70 kind zijnde. Ik had graag n keer met 'm op de foto gestaan of 'n hand gegeven.. Zeldzaam soort die man. Hij symboliseert in zn eentje de oude F1 voor mij. De tijd als kind t/m puber bleef Niki Lauda iemand waar ik enorm tegenop keek. Later als oudere man ook berucht om zijn tactloze uitspraken, maar ook n uitzonderlijk recht voor zn raap inborst. Zo iemand wordt echt echt gemist.

      Lauda is denk ik de eerste coureur waarvan ik de naam kende en waar ik een herinnering aan heb. Nikki Lauda die op Zandvoort won in 1985 in een Marlboro Mclaren. Mijn vader woonde toen in Hoofddorp en we konden het geluid van de wagens horen. Ik wilde er naar toe om te zien wat het was maar uiteraard gingen we niet. De race was al begonnen, we hadden geen kaarten en er stond file. Maar het was op tv en toen heb ik voor de eerste keer F1 gezien. Vanaf dat moment was ik er door gegrepen en vanaf het moment dat Senna in de Mclaren ging rijden heb ik bijna alles gezien, als het werd uitgezonden. Later zag je Lauda veel op tv, altijd met zijn Parmalat petje. Dat gaf hem iets geks en unieks maar toch had iedereen respect voor hem. Het was echt een karakter. Toen 1 van zijn vliegtuigen gecrashed was heeft hij zelf enorm veel bijgedragen om uit te zoeken wat de oorzaak was. Het was geen man van achter het bureau maar een baas die liet zien hoe het moest. Ik kan mij goed voorstellen dat Toto hem enorm mist. Dit soort mensen kan je niet vergeten en zeker niet vervangen.
