Daniel Ricciardo: "Monaco 2016 heeft me jaren achtervolgd"

Daniel Ricciardo heeft toegegeven dat het mislopen van de winst in de Grand Prix van Monaco van 2016 hem zeker twee jaar behoorlijk dwars heeft gezeten. De Australiër, toen nog actief voor Red Bull Racing, had in de kwalificatie het Mercedes-duo Lewis Hamilton en Nico Rosberg verslagen voor de pole position. In de race reed hij keurig aan de leiding, tot ronde 32.

Ricciardo kwam de pits in voor zijn pitstop, maar het team was niet klaar om hem te ontvangen en het duurde voor Formule 1-begrippen een eeuwigheid voordat hij weer de baan op kon. Tegen die tijd was Hamilton hem al gepasseerd. Dat was ook de volgorde aan de finish, wat voor een zwaar teleurgestelde Ricciardo op het podium zorgde.

"Zelfs vier jaar later herinner ik die dag tot in de details, alsof het zich als een video in mijn hoofd afspeelt", schrijft de Australiër op zijn social media-kanalen. "Ik zie mezelf nog door de tunnel rijden na die pitstop en ik was zo kwaad. Na afloop van de race wilde ik met niemand praten, ik zat zeker niet te wachten op medeleven. Ik was echt ziedend."

Wraak

Twee jaar later nam hij wraak door de Monegaskische Grand Prix alsnog op zijn naam te schrijven, zij het met horten en stoten. Twee versnellingen vielen weg en zijn MGU-K gaf de geest, maar Ricciardo slaagde erin om Sebastian Vettel achter zich te houden. "Ik ga niet liegen, Monaco 2016 heeft me zeker twee jaar achtervolgd."

"In 2018 deed ik weer niets fout en was ik bang dat de zege opnieuw door mijn vingers zou slippen. Het was een ander soort stress, puur vanwege wat ik in 2016 al had meegemaakt. Het gevoel dat na afloop overheerste was opluchting dat de winst me nu niet door de neus was geboord. Ik kon er pas de dagen erna echt van genieten, die zondag zelf was ik op van de stress", aldus Ricciardo.

Snap dat wel van hem. Het is natuurlijk een dramatisch racebaantje, maar gezien de historie en uitstraling wil iedere coureur die wel winnen.
