Green steekt de loftrompet over 'onderschatte' Sergio Perez

Racing Point-coureur Sergio Perez kan zich meten met de beste coureurs in de Formule 1, zeker als het aankomt op bandenmanagement. Die uitspraak deed Andrew Green, technisch directeur bij Racing Point, op Formule 1-podcast Beyond The Grid. Perez behoort inmiddels al jaren tot de inboedel van Racing Point en de voorgangers van dat team.

Om de Mexicaan weg te zetten als een degelijke en constante rijder zou een misvatting zijn, stelt Green. "Sergio wordt zwaar onderschat. Hij bevindt zich in de bloei van zijn leven, hij laat zich nergens door kennen. Zijn feedback is altijd uitstekend geweest. Zijn mentale capaciteit en de rust die hij bewaart om ons te vertellen wat de auto doet en hoe de wagen reageert - zelfs in een hectische race - zorgen er voor mij voor dat ik hem als een van de beste rijders beschouw."

Green vervolgt: "De manier waarop hij omspringt met de banden is ongekend, daarmee behoort hij echt tot de beste twee of drie coureurs uit het veld. Er zijn er niet veel die dat beter kunnen dan Sergio. Op een of andere manier voelt hij haarfijn aan wat de banden doen en wat hij moet doen in een bocht om het maximale uit de banden te halen. De beheersing van het spinnen van de wielen bij de exit van de bochten is uitzonderlijk, het lijkt wel of hij over een ingebouwde traction control beschikt."

Zwakke plek

Als Perez al een zwakke plek heeft, dan schuilt die in zijn prestaties in de kwalificaties. Green erkent dat de Mexicaan op zaterdagmiddag niet altijd alles uit het pakket haalt. "Sergio begrijpt dat de kwalificatie nog een minder punt van hem is. Dat komt deels doordat hij de auto liever afstelt voor de race op zondag. Dat is niet altijd de beste afstelling voor de kwalificatie. Maar hij wil het zo en hij heeft ook bewezen dat dit voor hem werkt. Soms overspeelt hij zijn hand en gaat het zowel zaterdag als zondag slecht, maar dat gebeurt echt maar zelden."

(Bijna) volledig off-topic, maar volgens Autobild gaan Toto Wolff en Mercedes uit mekaar na 2020, om dan vervolgens samen met Lawrence Stroll majority stake in Mercedes te kopen. Dit zal er voor zorgen dat Mercedes slechts als motorleverancier actief is in de F1. En dan zal het Mercedes f1 team fuseren met Aston Martin. Het klinkt vergezocht, maar een heleboel geruchten komen zodoende samen. Het meest onwerkelijke van alles is dat Stroll en Hamilton dan een team zullen zijn hahahahah

  Ik denk niet aan een fusie meer een constructie zoals RB heeft, ik denk ook niet dat Stroll zijn zoon naast Hamilton zal zetten de jongen wordt dan totaal weggereden.

Helemaal akkoord.

Perez is wat verbrand geweest tijdens zijn jaartje Mclaren.
Echter is hij niet enkel snel (vooral op zondag), hij is een kei in het managen van banden.

Perez was mijn eerste voorkeur voor Ferrari (ja, het zou voor vuurwerk zorgen met Leclerc).
Maar los van het feit dat het een Ferrari jeugd 'product' is lijkt het iemand die goed is in het afstellen vd wagen en steeds zijn stalgenoot tot het uiterste drijft.

Zet Perez in de juiste wagen en het is een GP winnaar...misschien zelfs kampioenmateriaal.
Zeker nu hij zijn ervaring meedraagt en intelligenter omgaat met bepaalde situaties.

  Perez is een overlever, een goede coureur zeker maar echt geen top gezien de moeite die hij vaak heeft met zijn stalgenoten.
  Mooie middenmoter die naar mijn mening in het juiste team voor hem zit bij een top team krijgt hij de rol van een 2e rijder.
