Gerhard Berger: "Denk niet dat Vettel volgend jaar F1 rijdt"

Gerhard Berger is niet optimistisch dat Sebastian Vettel volgend jaar nog steeds in de Formule 1 rijdt. Eerder deze week nodigde de Oostenrijker, die mede-eigenaar was van het team toen Vettel zijn eerste Grand Prix won in een Toro Rosso - de Duitser uit om over te schakelen naar DTM.

Missie niet gelukt

Berger zei dat het hem niet verbaast dat Sebastian Vettel en Ferrari hebben besloten dat na 2020 hun wegen scheiden.

"Je kon het zien aankomen. Hij hoeft zichzelf niet de schuld te geven. Hij sluit zich aan bij veel coureurs die Ferrari op het circuit aan de winnende hand wisten te pakken. Gerhard Berger was een van hen", glimlachte Berger tegenover Bild. "Maar als viervoudig wereldkampioen zal Sebastian het gemakkelijk aankunnen. Er zijn maar weinigen die zo succesvol zijn geweest."

Vettel niet met pensioen

Sommigen denken dat de 32-jarige Vettel nu met pensioen gaat, maar Berger denkt dat de Duitser eigenlijk wil blijven racen.

"Hij wil in een topteam rijden, maar alleen bij Mercedes is het mogelijk. En ik ben bang dat ook daar de stoelen bezet zijn."

Seizoensstart in Oostenrijk

Ten slotte zegt Berger blij te zijn dat zijn land het land is dat in juli met twee races de Formule 1-actie in gang zet.

"Dat komt dankzij de volharding van Red Bull, Didi Mateschitz en Helmut Marko. Enerzijds hebben ze het potentieel, maar vooral ook het vermogen om te presteren."

  Maar zo word ik al mijn hele leven genoemd door vrienden en goede bekenden.
  Ik heb zelfs shirts waar Wallie/Wally op de mouw geprint staat.
  Ik ben ook geen multimiljardair, maar gewoon Wallie de sysadmin uit Eindhoven die is verkast naar de Drechtsteden.

  Mateschitz stond een keer met pech langs de weg en toen belde hij de Berger om hem op te halen. Sindsdien zijn ze dikke maten en noemt Gerhard hem Didi.
