Lando Norris: "Heb Max Verstappen advies gevraagd over Sainz en Ricciardo"

Lando Norris staat aan het begin van zijn tweede seizoen in de Formule 1. In zijn eerste seizoen naast Carlos Sainz stelde de jonge Brit zeker niet teleur. In 2021 mag de McLaren-coureur het proberen naast de ervaren coureur Daniel Ricciardo. Norris probeert zich goed voor te bereiden en vroeg daarom zijn vriend Max Verstappen om advies.

We weten al dat de grid er in 2021 heel anders zal uitzien. Bij McLaren verschijnen Norris en Ricciardo aan de start. De jonge Brit rijdt naast een ervaren meervoudig Grand Prix-winnaar. Norris is echter niet onder de indruk, want in 2019 vocht hij met Carlos Sainz die inmiddels ook 5 jaar ervaring achter zijn naam heeft.

Stiekeme dingen

In een vooruitblik met Sky Sports zegt de 20-jarige Brit: "Het is moeilijk te zeggen wat je kunt verwachten. Vóór 2018 keken mensen bijvoorbeeld heel anders tegen Carlos aan dan nu. Hij straalde en krijgt nu veel meer erkenning. Van buiten weet je nooit wat je kunt verwachten."

"Ik ben trouwens nieuwsgierig naar Daniel. Aan het begin van dit seizoen ken ik Daniel een beetje beter dan ik Carlos destijds kende, maar er is nog zoveel dat ik niet van hem weet. Ik wil weten hoe hij werkt en welke stiekeme dingen hij achter de schermen doet."

Tips van Max Verstappen

Aan het begin van het seizoen 2019 kreeg Norris waardevol advies van Max Verstappen. Verstappen en Sainz debuteerden in 2015 samen in de Formule 1 bij Scuderia Toro Rosso. Norris hoopt dat hij deze keer kan rekenen op zijn simrace-vriend die ook drie jaar naast Daniel Ricciardo reed.

"Max geeft me veel waardevolle tips, hij wist al veel over Carlos en hij weet ook veel over Daniel. Het is een groot onderdeel van de sport om je teamgenoten te leren kennen. Ik wil plezier hebben in wat ik doe maar tegelijkertijd moet ik goede resultaten behalen. Werken met je teamgenoot is belangrijk, maar hij is ook je grootste rivaal."

"Het zal moeilijk worden naast Ricciardo en ik ga veel van hem leren. Als ik wil weten wat hem boos maakt, weet ik bij wie ik moet zijn voor de tips. Verstappen kan me daarbij helpen", zei Norris.

Wat betreft Sainz, kun je ook je info halen bij boulevard blad Marca, afdeling sport. Dan lijkt me Ricciardo wat eerlijker, alhoewel hij ook met een stalen gezicht heeft lopen liegen, betreffende het Renault verhaal. Zal wel een stukje eigenbelang zijn geweest.

Danny moet nog een heel jaar bij Renault afmaken terwijl Carlos weggaat.
Dat betekent dat het nu de tijd is voor Lando om zich diep in het team te nestelen. Carlos zal steeds minder bij de auto en het team betrokken worden waardoor de input en wensen van Lando tijdelijk belangrijker zijn.
Daarom moet hij zsm een sterke positie creëren door hard te werken, mondig te zijn in de vergaderingen en ten alle tijde 100% focus en discipline aan de dag te leggen. Doet hij dat goed dan zal hij goed ingeburgerd zijn tegen de tijd dat Daniël komt.
Als Danny onverhoopt ook nog een ruk seizoen met die Renol draait is het niet ondenkbaar dat zijn vorm en ritme ook niet optimaal zijn. Dat is de kans die Lando moet grijpen. In zekere zin heeft nu de betere papieren.

  Het gaat inderdaad om het respect en de waardering te krijgen van de monteurs en anderen in het team. Als die heel graag voor je willen werken, heb je al veel gewonnen. Dan heb je, zeker in het begin, een voordeel ten opzichte van Ricciardo volgend jaar.
