Steiner: "Ontwikkeling blijft stil tot ik weet wat ons budget is"

Volgens Haas-teambaas Gunther Steiner zal Haas voorlopig nog niet de ontwikkeling voor 2020 opstarten. Aangezien eigenaar Gene Haas overweegt of hij het kleine Amerikaanse team wil blijven financieren, heeft Steiner onlangs een einde gemaakt aan de ontwikkelingen te midden van de corona-crisis en de onzekere racekalender.

Tegenover de Deense krant Ekstra Bladet zei Steiner: "Ik ken het budget voor dit jaar nog steeds niet, en zolang ik dat niet weet, zal ik geen beslissingen nemen om de ontwikkeling van de auto te hervatten."

Problemen met koeling

Dat ondanks het feit dat zowel Kevin Magnussen als Romain Grosjean ernstige problemen hadden met de remmen in Oostenrijk. Steiner vervolgt: "Ik denk dat we te agressief waren met de koeling. Ze hebben een dynamische invloed op de auto, dus probeer ze zo min mogelijk te koelen."

Hij zei dat Haas dit weekend de tweede race op de Red Bull Ring anders zal aanpakken, maar afgezien daarvan wordt de ontwikkeling voorlopig stopgezet.

"Ik ben nog steeds van mening dat het beste voor ons is om het meeste te halen uit het pakket dat we nu hebben in plaats van ons te concentreren op updates zonder het startpunt te begrijpen. Dus we zullen zo doorgaan totdat ik weet in welke richting het seizoen gaat."

Steiner zei dat de resultaten van afgelopen zondag acceptabel waren: "Goed is een groot woord, maar ik denk niet dat het slecht was."

  Met hwt verliezen van Rokit hebben ze hetzelfde probleem als Haas denk ik.
  De tering naar de nering zetten, meer lijkt er voor beide teams (en Alfa Romeo) voorlopig niet in te zitten.

Ik zeg het niet graag, maar steek er dan maar een pay driver in desnoods. Veel slechter dan met de huidige coureurs kan het niet worden en dan heb je toch wat extra in de kassa.

Ik ben zelf werktuigbouwer van opleiding, maar ondanks deze technische achtergrond krijg ik deze zin niet ontleed tot het niveau dat ik snap wat hier staat. Ik ga ervan uit dat ze bedoelen dat de koeling afhankelijk is van de rijwind en dat ze die koeling iets teveel geknepen hadden? Zoiets? Of juist teveel gekoeld waardoor de remmen niet voldoende werking hadden?
Zeg het maar.

  Heeft natuurlijk te maken met de brakeducts. En de grote daarvan hebben een invloed op het gedrag van de auto. Waarschijnlijk hebben ze deze te klein gezet

  Steiner kennende zal hij geen rode cent in de auto van 2020 en 2021 willen stoppen en alles op de auto van 2021 willen zetten. Dan hebben ze nu de tijd om Renault te vragen of dat die motoren willen leveren. De deal met Ferrari was leuk toen de Ferrari nog hard reed. Nu voelen ze de pijn.

Een slecht 2020 zal ook een slecht 2021 inluiden aangezien de auto's vrijwel hetzelfde blijven. Moeilijke tijden voor HAAS. Hopelijk blijft dit team behouden in de F1.
