Valtteri Bottas: "Ik heb ook met andere teams gesproken"

Valtteri Bottas zegt dat hij met andere teams heeft gesproken voordat hij een nieuwe deal met Mercedes bereikte, waardoor hij voor een vijfde seizoen bij het Duitse team blijft. Dat zei de Fin gisteren tijdens de persconferentie toen hem werd gevraagd naar zijn nieuwe contract en de afgelopen weken.

In gesprek met ESPN zei de Mercedes-coureur: "Ja, ik heb met andere teams gesproken, dat kan ik wel zeggen. Zelfs voordat we begonnen met racen, was er nogal wat beweging in termen van teams en coureurs", voegde hij eraan toe, verwijzend naar de stoelendans na de terugkeer van Fernando Alonso bij Renault.

"Het team maakte heel duidelijk dat ze niemand zouden contracteren voordat we begonnen met racen omdat ze nog tijd nodig hadden om weer te gaan racen. Van mijn kant dacht ik, voor het geval Mercedes me om de één of andere reden niet een nieuw contract aan zou bieden, wilde ik ook rondkijken wat er te halen viel."

"Ik wil niet teveel in detail treden hoe diep de discussies waren, maar ik keek rond wat er zou zijn voor het geval dat."

Red Bull en Renault

Feit is dat er realistisch gezien maar één ander team is dat hem een racewinnende auto kan aanbieden, en hoewel de Fin er voor staat om als tweede man te fungeren voor Lewis Hamilton, zou hij bij Red Bull dezelfde rol vervullen voor Max Verstappen.

Wel is bekend dat Renault met de Fin heeft gesproken. Dat maakte Alain Prost bekend toen hij werd gevraagd waarom het Franse team voor Fernando Alonso koos. Prost maakte vorige maand bekend dat het team ook met Vettel en Bottas had gesproken maar de keus op Alonso viel vanwege zijn verleden met het team, en intrinsieke motivatie voor het project van Renault in de F1.

Toen hem werd gevraagd waarom hij weer een overeenkomst voor één jaar accepteerde, zei hij: "Als er een langdurig contractaanbod was geweest, zou ik er zeker voor zijn gegaan. Maar we besloten opnieuw met het team om daarvoor te gaan, en als dat is alles wat ze te bieden hebben, dan neem ik het aan."
