Max Verstappen: Nog niet bezig met behalen van titel in 2020

Max Verstappen zegt dat hij nog niet bezig is met het eventueel behalen van de titel dit jaar.

Vorig weekend maakte Verstappen de beide Mercedessen in door zuiniger en slimmer met zijn banden om te gaan in Silverstone. Nu ook de snelheid van de Red Bull op de langere runs op vrijdag veelbelovend is, lijkt het niet ondenkbaar dat Verstappen zich alsnog kan gaan mengen in de strijd om het WK Formule 1.

Maar, zegt Max, die overwinning is nog niet voldoende om de Red Bull dan ook maar direct te gaan zien als een WK-winnende auto.

Eén zwaluw maakt nog geen zomer

Max hamert tijdens een interview met CNN op realisme. “We hebben nog maar een race gewonnen waarin wij de snelste waren. Dat waren we in alle andere (races, red.) niet.”

"Ik denk nog niet aan het kampioenschap op dit moment. Ik wil gewoon mijn best doen elk raceweekend."

Tegen Ziggo Sport zegt Verstappen:

"In de kwalificatie verliezen we gemakkelijk vijf tienden ten opzichte van Mercedes, maar op de lange run ziet het er goed uit. Het gaat voor Red Bull veel beter op dat vlak."

Hij vervolgt: "We weten ook niet of Mercedes het achterste van de tong laat zien. Maar onze auto voelt in ieder geval goed op de langere run."

De voorsprong van Hamilton bedraagt 30 punten, maar de voorsprong is fragiel. Veel hangt af van de manier waarop Mercedes het slijtage-probleem van hun banden daadwerkelijk verholpen heeft. Dat zal zondag zichtbaar worden tijdens de warme Spaanse GP.

Het was een stukkie spannender geweest als Max niet de eerste race was uitgevallen. Hij had zeker op het podium gestaan, en bijna zeker op de eerste plek.
