Kimi Raikkonen toont aan dat zijn Alfa Romeo beetje bij beetje iets sneller wordt

Met de veertiende snelste tijd tijdens de kwalificatie had Kimi Raikkonen voor het eerst dit jaar een iets sterkere uitgangspositie tijdens een race dit jaar. De Alfa Romeo-coureur wist de Grand Prix van Spanje als veertiende af te sluiten, na op dezelfde positie te zijn gestart. Raikkonen toont daarmee aan dat het team een klein sprongetje vooruit heeft gemaakt bij het sneller maken van de Alfa Romeo.

Raikkonen wist tijdens de kwalificatie in tegenstelling tot zijn teamgenoot Giovinazzi wel door te dringen naar het tweede deel en kwalificeerde. Zijn teamgenoot kwam niet verder dan de twintigste tijd en was maar liefst 1,3 seconden slomer dan de F1-wereldkampioen van 2007. Terwijl Raikkonen als veertiende finisht, komt Giovinazzi als zestiende over de eindstreep.

Kimi: "Had meer in gezeten"

Kimi Raikkonen vertelt na de race tegen de aanwezige pers: "De auto had een goede snelheid tijdens de laatste run op de zachte band. Ik had gehoopt dat we nog zo'n setje over hadden om te gebruiken want dat ging echt heel goed. Helaas hadden we die niet dus het eindresultaat is beetje teleurstellend aangezien ik het gevoel had dat er meer in zat."

Volgens Kimi Raikkonen zit er nog meer in als hij en zijn team de auto verder blijven ontwikkelen.

Finish vóór beide Williams-coureurs en Grosjean in de HAAS

"Alles bij elkaar denk ik dat we een beetje beter voor de dag kwamen dit weekend: we moeten zorgen dat we blijven ontwikkelen en nieuwe dingen blijiven proberen om het potentieel van de auto te benutten en meer snelheid te vinden. Die kant moeten we gewoon op", vertelt de 40-jarige Fin.

Antonio Giovinazzi wist vanaf de twintigste plaats in Barcelona uiteindelijk nog als zestiende onder de zwart-wit geblokte vlag door te rijden. Daarmee liet hij de beide Williams-coureurs achter zich plus de HAAS van Romain Grosjean. Daar heeft de Italiaan na de race best vrede mee.

Giovinazzi: "Er zijn wat positieve dingen waar we op terug kunnen kijken vandaag. Het was wel een moeilijke race, maar als je achteraan start denk ik dat we het maximale er uit hebben weten te slepen vandaag. We eindigden voor onze directe concurrenten voor het kampioenschap en we toonden een goede racesnelheid, vooral het laatste deel op de zachte banden. Natuurlijk moeten we verder ontwikkelen om verder naar voren te komen, maar we kunnen in ieder geval wat bemoediging halen uit de race."

Alfa heeft last van de Ferrari motor, en verder het feit dat ze alleen Raikonnen hebben die het team vooruit kan duwen.

Giovinazzi heeft bewezen het "net niet" te zijn.
Die moet vrezen voor zijn stoeltje.

Ik verwacht Kimi te stoppen eind dit jaar, en dat men bij Alfa heel graag een ervaren jongen als Hulkenberg binnen te halen.

Naast de Hulk zal dan wel een Ferrari junior komen, wellicht Mick Schumacher, Callum Illot of Robert Shwartzman.

  Ja of doe eens gek en zet zowel Illot en Schwarzman in die auto's. Zo houd je de filosofie van Sauber ook nog een beetje in ere door vooral talenten in die auto's te zetten (op een aantal uitzonderingen na dan).

  Kan ja, echter zoals ik al aangaf... ik denk dat Alfa er baat bij heeft om minimaal 1 goede ervaren rijder in dienst te nemen om het team op sleeptouw te nemen naar een hoger plan.
  
  Maar ben het met je eens, Illot en Shwartzman erin zou prachtig zijn. Twee beloftevolle talenten.
